“How on Earth did Lydia acquire an Articuno?!” I silently thought to myself.
“Impressed?” Lydia smirked. “It’s certainly a beautiful Pokémon, but I think its real strength lies in its power!”
“No! Combusken, watch out!” I desperately commanded.
“Too late!” Lydia roared. “Articuno, use Ice Beam!”
Articuno quickly shot through the air, and unleashed a powerful beam of ice at Conbusken. Despite taking hardly any damage from ice-type attacks due to Combusken’s own type, my Pokémon was knocked out instantly by the beam. Articuno was known for having huge power, and now it was the fastest Pokémon on the field!
“Combusken, return!” I muttered.
I looked at the two Poké Balls I had left – Totodile, and Axew. Axew was fast, but took huge damage from ice type attacks. On the other hand, Totodile took little damage from ice type attacks, but was quite slow. The odds were definitely against me now that Combusken had been taken down.
I picked one Poké Ball up, and threw it into the air. “Axew, let’s do this!”
“Why would you bring out Axew?” Lydia asked. “It’s weak against ice-type attacks!”
“Don’t underestimate Axew.” I replied, smiling.
“Ha! Let’s see how it does, then!” Lydia laughed. “Articuno, use Ice Beam!”
“Dodge the attack, and then use Scary Face!”
“No! I can see why you brought Axew out now.” Lydia muttered.
I smiled and nodded as Axew back flipped and dodged the incoming Ice Beam, before using Scary Face and draining some of the speed Articuno had. The Legendary Pokémon was still extremely fast, however, and I knew that Axew wouldn’t be able to do the same trick forever.
“Alright, Articuno! Use Aerial Ace!” Lydia commanded, prompting her Articuno to swoop down at amazing speeds and knock Axew into the ground before I could even think of a counter.
While Axew was picking itself up from the ground, Lydia smiled and saw her window of opportunity. “Articuno, use Ice Beam!”
“Wait, no! Axew, dodge it!” I desperately shouted, but it was too late. Articuno turned around a launched a powerful Ice Beam at Axew, hitting the Tusk Pokémon square on.
I watched in shock as Axew landed a few metres away from my feet, but was somehow still fighting. He picked himself up from the ground, and stood facing a floating Articuno defiantly.
Lydia smiled at Axew’s will to fight. “He’s a tough little thing, isn’t he? I almost feel bad about having to take him down!”
“Bring it on! We can take whatever attack you’ve got.” I smirked. Axew let out of burst of dark fire to show its fighting spirit.
“The real fight begins now, then! Articuno, use Aerial Ace!”
“Intercept with Dragon Rage!”
As Articuno raced towards Axew with its wings glowing, Axew let out a huge blast of dark fire that stopped Articuno in its tracks and sent it flying into the ceiling.
“Use Ice Beam!”
“Dodge it!”
Again, Axew back flipped past the Ice Beam, dodging the attack. As Articuno flew closer, still firing the Ice Beam, Axew ran towards a wall and used it as a spring board to soar high into the sky.
“Use Dragon Claw!” I commanded.
Axew smiled, and formed Dragon Claw in its hand, which it then slammed into Articuno. The Legendary Pokémon crashed into the ground, but was not yet defeated.
