“…Sam Kenealy vs Owen O’Conner!” The announcer said, looking up at the image above him.
“Finally!” I thought.
The Graduation Exam had ticked along steadily after Toby’s stunning battle, but none of the matches seemed spectacular. Kyle McKenzie won easily in his match-up, executing a brilliant fire combo with his Charmandar. How he had thought up something so complex was beyond me, especially seeing how Kyle was not a particularly bright student.
Regardless, it was now my time to shine. Owen O’Conner was a competent Trainer, so I knew this would not be easy. Toby patted me on the shoulder, and wished me luck before departing to the stands.
“Trainers, are you ready?” The referee asked me and Owen.
We both nodded, and readied our Poké Ball’s. It was time!
“Let’s do this, Hitmontop!” Owen shouted, throwing his Poké Ball high into the air. Hitmontop appeared from the whirl of light, ready to take on its opponent.
“Totodile, I’m counting on you!” I shouted, casting my Poké Ball into the air and causing my partner to appear from the whirl of bright light.
Totodile landed easily, and immediately stood ready for battle. Hitmontop similarly looked ready for battle. This was going to be a heated battle.
“Hitmontop, let’s waste no time! Use Gyro Ball!” Owen shouted to his partner.
Hitmontop quickly started spinning on the spike on its head, and sped towards Totodile, who looked ready to take the hit.
“Totodile, use Water Gun on the left side of Hitmontop! Let’s stop the move altogether!” I told my Totodile, who obeyed without question.
Totodile quickly released a continuous burst of water from its mouth, which hit Hitmontop and stopped it in its tracks. Due to the continuous flow of water, Hitmontop’s spin was reversed and the move was stopped altogether.
“Damn! Hitmontop, use Quick Attack!”
Hitmontop quickly recovered from Totodile’s attack and spun towards the opposing Pokémon. The move was so fast that I didn’t even have time to warn my partner, and could only watch as Hitmontop smashed into Totodile at lightning speed. Totodile was thrown into the air, and landed hard on the ground. Totodile picked itself up from the ground and readied itself for a return attack by Hitmontop.
“Hitmontop! Use Quick Attack again!” Owen told his Pokémon clearly.
Hitmontop again started spinning and sped towards Totodile, once more ramming itself into it. Totodile was launched into the air, and only through sheer determination was able to stand up again.
Without losing control, I thought of a plan to stop Hitmontop. “Totodile, let’s beat Hitmontop at its own game! Use Aqua Jet!” I shouted to Totodile, who quickly surrounded itself in water and shot towards Hitmontop.
“Hitmontop, use Quick Guard!” Owen told Hitmontop calmly, who crossed its arms across its chest and created a magical barrier.
“No!” I shouted. “Quick Guard prevents fast moves like Aqua Jet from hitting the opponent! Watch out, Totodile!!”
However, my cry was too late. Totodile slammed into the magical barrier, completely removing the water around it.
“Hitmontop, use Close Combat!” Owen told Hitmontop.
I could only watch in despair as Hitmontop unleashed a frighteningly fast barrage of punches and kicks. Totodile stood no chance of escaping any them. The fight was over…
