Breathe in, breathe out. Inhale and exhale. I couldn't. I choked on my breath. Today was another day of human trafficking in the goddamn Pet Shop. How did my life even come to this? I was a good person. I was never bitchy or rude like some of my friends were. I never bullied anyone. So why on earth was this happening to me?

I let out a long sigh as I tried to get comfortable in the cage. I was literally wearing black lacy lingerie, but it was either that or nothing. Today was another day where one of us would get sold to a fricking bloodsucker.

Fuck. My. Life.

The curtains went up. There we were, on display in our cages. I peered at the vampires through the glass, which had a few holes so that I could breathe. How generous.

The vampires all looked so perfect, unreal. It was mesmerizing and disgusting at the same time. They were going to buy us, feed on us, and then kill us.

Wonderful. Just freaking great.

The Pet Shop owners hated me. Let's just say that I wasn't exactly a good pet. In fact, I was a terrible pet. Every chance I got, I would insult them, even if it meant that I was going to get punished. The punishment was whipping. Those sadistic bastards whipped us all the time, but they never fed on us. That decreased our value.

I rolled my eyes as all the vampires leered at me. I was basically a vampire magnet since my blood type was AB-negative, the rarest blood type. My mother told me that it was a gift that I had such a rare blood type, but it honestly started to feel like a bloody curse. I miss her, my mother. I miss my entire family. They were all killed in front of me.

"Mom! Dad! Someone's at the door!" I yelled from my room. I was texting my boyfriend, Brandon, at the time.

"I'll get it!" my little brother Jason called.

A few seconds passed, and that's when I heard it. An ear-piercing scream, which was my mother's. I leaped off my bed and dashed downstairs, wanting to know what happened.

My mother's dead body lay there, next to Jason's. A man stood over them, his mouth covered in blood. A choked out a sob. My dad pulled out the shotgun and fired at the man, but it didn't seem to affect him. What the hell was happening? The man somehow sped over to my dad and sunk his fangs in my dad's throat.

"Dad!" I screamed and ran to him, but it was too late. I watched as my dad's head landed on the floor with a thud, followed by his body.

My hand shot up to my mouth to stop the sobs, but they kept coming; I couldn't control them. The pain was unbearable. It felt like someone had ripped out my heart. The man approached me with a bloodthirsty look in his eyes. I didn't care, though. My family was dead. Even Jason, a fucking eleven-year-old. I sank to my knees as I clutched my stomach, feeling the tears run down my face. I had never felt this much pain. The man grabbed my arm and I screamed, but I wasn't scared. Just kill me, I thought miserably. I didn't have anything to live for, anyway.

I couldn't take it anymore. I blacked out.

My heart clenched at the memory, but I tried to put it behind me. I used to be a sweet, polite girl. Now, not so much. I don't have anything to live for, anyway. But I was not going to get killed by one of these leaches. I don't think so.

Vampires of all shapes and sizes eyed me greedily like I was a piece of meat. I hated the Pet Shop. I felt like more of an object than a person. I glared at all the vampires. Humans weren't supposed to look vampires in the eyes, but I honestly could not care less.

This was supposed to be a high ranking pet shop, where lords and ladies would come to get their pets. I rolled my eyes at the thought. I would never submit to these bloodsuckers unless I had a really good reason. As I said, I wasn't going to die at the hand of something that's literally dead.
