Chapter Fifteen
“Run!” I yell, and I book it to the tunnel that led us in here. Everyone follows me through the tunnel and to the outside, where the sun blasts its unforgiving rays upon us.
“What are we going to do?” Christina asks me.
Ghosts says, “We need to figure out how to get to that stone. We can’t fight our way through, we don’t have any weapons. The only option is to try to sneak past everything, but even that seems impossible.”
Connor has this look on his face. It’s a look as if he is thinking really hard about something. We all look to him, but he looks away and says nothing.
“There totes has to be some secret back door or something.”
“No there’s no other entrance into the cave besides this one right here.” I jab a thumb in the direction of the tunnel. “I’m afraid to say this, but I think Ghost’s right. We have to try to sneak past them.”
Connor still doesn’t say anything. What is he thinking about?
Ghost says, “Alright, let’s slowly go back through the tunnel, and try to look at the room inside without getting caught. Maybe we can find a way to go to get around everything.”
“I agree with Ghost.”
“Well, let’s do this then,” I say.
We go back through the tunnel, and at the very end, we peek around a corner to take a look at the room inside. It’s slammed packed with dragons of all different shapes and sizes.
“There’s no way we can make it. I don’t see any open path to the stone,” Christina looks like she’s completely given up.
Ghost says, “We’re going to have to fight our way through, but with what?”
“No,” I exclaim, “We’re sticking to the original plan of sneaking past them all. Let’s just take it small steps at a time.”
“What do you mean?”
“Look to the right. You see that stalagmite over there.” I point. “It’s big enough for all of us to hide behind, if we can get there. We’ll think of what to do next once we’re there.” That was my plan. A bad one, but the best we had.
“OMG, Envy. We won’t be able to make it there. There’s those four scorpion things between it and us.”
“She’s right,” Ghost chimes in, “That path is blocked.”
Connor hasn’t said a word since his griffin was killed.
“Look again, guys. Notice how every five seconds each of the scorpions turns away from us, and for another five seconds they look back at the stone, leaving the path wide open. If we get there in five seconds, we will make it.”
“That’s suicidal.”
“If you would rather fight your way through, Ghost, then go ahead, be my guest. But Christina, Connor, and I are going to try to sneak around. Right guys?”
“Hash tag team Envy and Christina.” She fakes a smile, and I can see fear invading her eyes.
Connor nods, still not speaking. What was up with him? No time to think about it.
