Chapter Seventeen

They were in a swamp, the ground everywhere covered in a foot of water. Rain poured from the sky, so he was drenched, blonde hair sticking to his face. From the foot of water were a bunch a trees reaching up into the heavens. Vines grew from tree to tree, and branches dangled moss, so the swamp was pretty packed. Though, they were still able to walk around without much trouble.

“Looking for me?” Someone – or something - said from behind them.

Envy turned around to face the origin of the voice, and shocked, his muscles twitched. In front of him, was a reptilian humanoid. It was able to walk, talk, and use its arms like a human, but it was completely a crocodile; or an alligator, he didn’t’ know the difference.

“Yes, we’ve been looking for you. Do you have what we need?” the female next to Envy asked.

“Like, it’s right here,” it dangled a small, leather bag from its free hand.

The creature wore armor, made of metal that covered its entire body, except for a few places like its knees so that its joints could bend. In the hand not holding the leather bag was a sword.

“Well toss it over to us, pretty please,” the female said.

“Come get it, gosh,” Its hand clenched tighter around the handle of the sword, snout opening into a wicked smile – if crocodiles could smile.

Envy laughed, rain finding his mouth as he did so, and said to the female, “What do you think we should do, Christina? I was thinking we go easy on him.”

“Go easy on him? Envy, we just finished getting our black belt todays, there’s no going easy. This croc is totes going down!” She tightened the belt around her white gi, and squatted into a horse stance to keep her center of balance at its best. Her hands, held in front of her face, motioned for the reptile to charge.

“I’ve waited like my whole life to finally battle you. The prophecy warned me off meeting you. Trust me, I’ve trained well.” It tied the pouch to something on its armor near its waistline, raised its sword and said, “Come at me.”

Christina, keeping her horse stance, slowing walked around the crocodile to the left. Envy went around the right until it was between him and her. “Please just hand us the bag, and we will let you go,” he said, not wanting to fight, it was always better to walk away if you could.

“As soon as pigs fly, I’ll hand it over. You must think I’m like a total idiot or something.”

“Wrong answer,” Christina said, charging him. As she got closer, the crocodile swung its sword downward across its body, nearly hitting her, but she was too fast. Already lying on the ground in front of it– in order to dodge the blade – she spun around, making sure her legs connected with its feet. The reptilian fell backwards.

Envy watched as it fell backwards, landing on the ground with its limbs spread out like it was trying to make a snow angel. Except for its long snout, the entire croc was submerged under the swamp’s water. That was too easy. Suddenly, it jumped back to its feet, facing him.

“Come get me,” he laughed. As it bolted towards him, sword held high in the sky, he turned and ran towards a tree. “Christina checked this out!”

Laughing, Christina whispered to herself, “That adorable idiot. What’s he up to now?” She really liked Envy, but she was raised to believe the guy had to make the first move in a relationship. Knowing it was stupid, that a girl COULD make the first move, she decided that today was the day she tried to kiss him.
