Chapter Eighteen
Thursday Night
“Hey, watch it!”
We were still in North Carolina, in the middle of a random person’s cornfield with the corn three feet over my head. Around us was a circle we cleared by stomping down the stalks. The purpose for doing this, according to Christina, was to make a homemade boxing ring to practice in. (This was the first time she has ever wanted to ‘train,’ but I went along with it.)
“I’m totes sorry! Ha-ha you need to practice your defensive skills if you want to win all four of these quests.”
She was wearing my black skinny jeans that led down to her matching Toms. Above it all, she wore a white, knitted sweater. Her hair carelessly fell from her head, prisoner to the wind.
“I say this in the nicest way possible, but you need to practice more if you’re going to let a girl beat you.”
I wore white skinny jeans that had been cut off directly at my knees so that they were turned into shorts. My T-shirt was black. Pretty much, my outfit was the complete inverse of Christina’s.
“Yea, yea,” I say, “Just... Let’s do this one more time, it’s getting dark outside. I think this is the time I’ll finally get it right. Besides, I’m waaay stronger than you.”
I wink at her, and she responds with a kick towards my sternum. Trying to step out of the way in time, I don’t do it fast enough. I’m sent hurling onto my behind.
I already told her about my dream. She responded by saying, “Crocodile people… I’m not going to like this quest... Maybe the kiss will come true at least.”
She looked into my eyes, and I knew for certain she wanted to kiss me. Butterflies filled my stomach. I’ve never kissed a girl before, what am I supposed to do?
“Alright, you can’t beat me. Let’s see if you can catch me.”
She turns and runs out of the circle and into the cornstalks. The sun was completely down now, so all I had to see by was the moonlight, but even that was very faint.
“Wait, come here!” I say too late.
Great, I’ll never find her.
Cobs of corn – reminding me of my bus driver – slap me in the face as I plow through the stalks. The soil is very soft so my feet seep into the ground with every step. I didn’t know crickets lived in cornfields, but I hear them everywhere.
“I’m over here!” I hear Christina yelling from a distance. Her voice sounded like it was coming from behind me to the left, maybe fifty feet away.
I pivot around and run towards the epicenter of her voice. “Christina!”
“Right here!”
“Where?!”
That when I find her. I’m running at full speed and I see her when I’m a foot away. There’s no wind anymore, so all I feel is my body smash into hers. Thinking quickly, I grab her in a bear hug and spin us around so that I land on my back to break the fall. She painlessly lands straddled over my stomach.
“Hey cutie,” Christina says biting one side of her lip. Enough moonlight was available for me to be able to see that.
“Hey. You’re cute too. Let me up!” I try to struggle free, but it’s pointless. She is stronger.
