Chapter Two
Sweat was pouring down my face, the heart in my chest pounding, and my entire body shaking to the core. I roll onto my left side and face my room. Beside the queen bed I was sleeping on, there was a wooden nightstand with an alarm clock on it. It was only eight in the morning. Perfect, I had plenty of time to catch the school bus at nine.
I sit up, lean forward, and flip the switch to my alarm off, which was set for eight thirty. Against my will, I woke up early today because I had another nightmare, as I have had every Wednesday night for as long as I can remember. Yea, it’s weird to only have them on a certain day, but it’s out of my control.
Looking out my partially open window I see the inner walls of the great pyramidal dome. At the very top, inside, was a light that only came on during the day. The entire structure engulfs our mile squared city, completely made of an advanced metal that didn’t allow any object to pass through it. I’d heard stories of the outside world’s failed attempts to blast through it with nuclear power. Why was it here? Not sure, I’d never seen the outside world before.
“Moooom!” I shout from my room on the second floor to the kitchen downstairs. My mom is the best, she always wakes up extra early just to make me food before I catch the bus.
She yells back, “if you want to talk to me, you quit being lazy and come down here and talk to me. I don’t like yelling across the house.” I change my mind, maybe she isn’t the best, but I still love her.
“Ugh,” I groan as I get out of bed and throw on some clothes. I choose a pair of black skinny jeans, with a blue cookie monster shirt that makes my eyes pop, though that was not my intention.
After I’m dressed for school I leave my room and descend down the stairs. “Is breakfast ready?” I say to mom as soon as I see her.
“Good morning to you too, Envy,” she says sarcastically, “but yes the waffles are sitting over there, with the syrup and butter next to them.” She point points to the table in the dining room. Above the table is a beautiful chandelier that looks like a million dollars.
“Thanks mom! I love you so much!” Ok so I was wrong. I have the best mom in the entire world!
“I have a girl’s day today with some of my girlfriends, and I need to go now. Just clean up after you’re done. Syrup in the pantry, butter in the fridge, and dishes in the sink,” she said as she opened the front door, ready to leave.
“Mom! I’m a freshman now! I know how to be clean!” I’d like to say I’m pretty responsible seeing how I’m now on my last week of freshman year.
After my mom left, I ate my waffles and cleaned up. I sat around and read a book in my living room until about eight fifty nine when the bus honked outside my house. I quickly grabbed my backpack –which I left at the front door the previous day – and ran to the bus, after locking up the place.
“Bob Cob! Bus driver!” my bus driver greets me as soon as I step on the bus. I just nod because I think he is a total creeper. I will never understand why I am the only person he says anything to. I told my mom if I ever show up missing that he has probably kidnapped me.
At the back of the bus, I sit next to my friend Connor. “Cough it up man, what happened?” he says. I notice his brown hair is extra curly today. On his wrist, I also notice, is the bracelet I made for him about two weeks ago. It matches the bracelet on my wrist. They were supposed to signify the sincerity of our friendship.
I know exactly what he is talking about. I forgot to tell you, but those nightmares I have Wednesday night, everyone at my school has them. I answer his question by explaining everything that happened in my dream.
