Chapter Thirty
“Did it work?” It was Envy asking. It was still dark outside, and he was standing too far away from Connor to be able to tell it was him.
I run three steps and envelop Connor in a monstrously tight hug. It actually worked, I couldn’t believe it. “Connor we’ve all missed you so much!”
“That’s not him!” Envy says, “That’s impossible. No way it was able to bring someone back from the dead.” He fumbles with the calculator and the next thing I know the sun is brought back up into the sky so that it was twelve oh clock Wednesday. “Well I’ll be damned. It worked.”
The point of bringing Connor back was to hopefully remind Envy of who I was and to break whatever control the calculator had over him. Did it work?
“Christina!” Connor yells with joy as I hug him. When I let go, after Envy has brought light back into the sky, he sees his best friend. “Envy! I haven’t seen you in forever!” He runs to hug Envy. “I actually thought I was dead, but I don’t remember being dead, what happened? And how did it go from night to day in the matter of seconds? One of you two has a lot of explaining to do,” he says still hugging his friend.
As his friend breaks the hug, Envy says, “This,” holding his calculator up. “And I’m not getting rid of it, so don’t even try to cross me.”
Connor shoots me a puzzled look. “You’ve missed a lot,” I tell him.
To Envy he says, “What is the calculator for? I knew you liked math, I just didn’t think you liked it enough to be doing it during the four quests.” Then to both of us, “Somebody please tell me how I’m alive.”
I’m about to explain everything to him, but Envy beats me to the chase of speaking. “Why did you do that in the cave? Why in God’s name did you run for the stone without the rest of us?!”
Reaching his hand up to his curly brown hair, he twirls his finger in it not answering the question.
“I’m not playing around Connor! Why did you do it?!”
“I told you right before I did it why I did. I didn’t think we were going to be able to finish the quest alive. And you already saved my life. And you are my best friend. And you would’ve done the same for me. My entire life that I remember, as I’ve told you, I’ve wanted to live heroically. I wanted to live my life for one purpose and one purpose only. I want to be remembered when I’m gone. Ghost was constantly saving me during the first quest. And that was just the first quest. If I continued on, I knew I was going to die. I just rather would’ve died helping you make it to the next quest, then have died being forgotten.”
“But you’re wrong, Connor!” Envy yelled, “I would’ve remembered you no matter what. There’s no way in Hell I would’ve forgotten about you. The last thing you said was to forgive you for lying to me. What was that about?”
Connor turns away from us and looks up into Hawaii’s mountains. “I lied to you by not telling you what I had planned. And I also lied to you by not telling you I had a Dream Nightmare when you told me about yours. Look I’m sorry. I understand if you’re mad or you hate me, but I did what I did with the best intentions in mind. You were my best friend, Envy.”
Envy laughs. “You were my best friend Connor. So I blame myself for you death. Did you not even stop to consider what would’ve happened if you died before you got to the stone or what was to happen to me after you died?”
