Chapter Twenty Eight

I tried to sleep that night, but I couldn’t. I thought upon what happened as images aggressively flashed through my mind. Envy killed Hesh, a poor girl, Tear, Kelsey, and who knows how many other people - Since I had done the four quests before, I knew that the twelve of us who started the third quest weren’t the only ones; the Principal would have spread small groups of us out all over to make it more fun to watch. Losing those three wasn’t a huge blow to my face as I didn’t care for them, but still, they were people, and they didn’t deserve to die.

“Great, you scared off the person who was the nicest to me,” I had complained after Blade ran off into the woods. I was really going to miss him, but I would rather stay with Envy and try to turn him good again then chase someone I just met and possible never see my boyfriend again.

That didn’t work very well. I brought up so many good times we had together, how we felt when our lips met, and all the stuff we talked about. None of it even phased him as he insisted he didn’t care about me anymore; it was just a thing in the past he told me.

Ten minutes after Blade had ran off, Envy told me to shut up before he killed me that he needed some sleep for tomorrow. Tomorrow was Wednesday, the last day we had before we lost the quest. I wanted to rest too, but I just couldn’t. I sat on an overturned tree next to Envy’s tiki setup the entire night and watched him sleep from afar, not even considering trying to steal the calculator again. God, he was so freakin cute, why did this have to happen to him?

When he finally woke up, just as the suns morning rays shone through the trees, the first thing I tried to do was be sweet and hope maybe he remembered the way he felt about me. It wasn’t fair he didn’t remember, but as I was taught freshman year: Life isn’t fair.

We used our brainpower, together, and came up with an idea of where the chest might be. That was where we were at right now.

As the sun reached the exact middle of the sky, we faced our enemies. Ten of them to be exact, and they all looked the same. They had the head of the black smoke monster, with the surgeons mask stitched to their mouth. Their body was this shell that allowed them to walk, slowly, but didn’t show their feet. All around the shell were like twenty holes that long water moccasins slithered half-way out of to defend the monster they lived inside.

We were in the middle of the swamp in what looked like a roman coliseum. We were in the middle of the coliseum standing next to where the chest was. As soon as we were about to get to the chest, the door to the only entrance closed, and the walls surrounding us were too high for me to climb out of. As we turned to look at the closing door, a metal shield came up and enclosed the chest – which Envy’s calculator was unable to remove. A few seconds later is when the monsters appeared out of thin air thirty feet behind us, one of them wearing a key around its neck that obviously would unlock the shield protecting the chest.

In the same moment they appeared, Envy took a threatening step towards them only to be met by a bunch of ninja stars flying in his direction. He pressed his calculator and before the stars were able to hit him, they stopped in their tracks and rocketed back at the enemy where they caused no damage against the indestructible shells.

Envy laughed. He couldn’t be made immortal, but with that calculator he wasn’t able to get hurt. “You guys can’t even hit me. This is going to be easy. Too easy. So easy, in fact, that I want to have a little fun with this one.”

Pressing the enter button on the calculator, Envy’s entire outfit changed. He now wore a various-shades-of-green-camouflaged pair of pants and a long sleeved jacket. Over the jacket was black bullet proof vest. His head had some kind of helmet that looked to be bullet proof also. In his hands was an ARX assault rifle. He hunched forward with his grip tightened on his gun like he had been in the military since he was a kid.
