Chapter Sixteen - Memories

A week after the party, Emerys sat in Killian's class, running the necklace he had got her for her birthday through her fingers.
It was a sterling silver key that, in the top, read 'though she be but little, she is fierce' - a Shakespeare quote that both Killian and Emerys thought fitted her both beautifully and comically.
"As we approach your final couple of months here, you guys are going to be tested to the max. This will be one of the most stressful times of your life, I won't lie. Everything you've learned over the past few years? Don't you dare forget it, because you're going to need it." Killian explained to the class.
He gave Emerys a small side glance as he looked around at all the faces that looked like they'd rather be having bleach-drinking competitions than be where they were in that moment.
"Are we going to have an end of high school party, Mr Jones?" One of the students asked.
Killian chuckled. "Given that I'm fairly positive that at least most of you are going to pass this class, yes."
The sea of faces perked up a bit there, except for a couple who shrunk down in their seats.

After school, Emerys chose to make her way home on foot so that she could take some time to write in her journal on the docks.
She didn't realise how much of a mistake that was until she saw someone she would never expect to. Sat on the docks, right in her spot.
"Jake..." She gasped.
He turned and gave her a smirk.
"Hey Em." He said, patting the section of dock beside him.
She strode up to him with a confused expression.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
"Well, all of my teachers said that there was more chanced of the Bayou freezing over than me graduating this year, so I decided to quit whilst I'm behind and ditch school. That was where I came across your grandmother - she says hi, by the way." He smirked. "She told me you were in this tiny little town in Maine, so I decided to take a long ol' drive and here I am. As soon as I realised this was a seaside town, I just knew there were only so many places you'd spend your spare time, so I opted for the most likely." He gestured to the docks.
"You need to leave." Emerys sighed.
Jake frowned. "But I drove all this way for you. You know I'm not one for romantic gestures, but I did this anyway."
The girl sighed impatiently. "I told you it's over. It has been for a year. Get that into your head, Jake. Go home."
Jake rose from his spot on the wooden platform and walked over to her, causing Emerys to take a few steps backwards.
"Is it because of that guy you brought to the French Quarter? Because I stopped by Storybrooke High - I was going to wait outside for you until I saw your dad's car, but then I saw your new beaux through one of the classroom windows. You never said he was a teacher."
Emerys' eyes slightly widened.
"You stay out of my business, Jake Deckard." She warned, attempting to stand her ground.
"Wouldn't it be a shame if someone gave your dad a head's up about one of his teachers dating his precious daughter." Jake raised an eyebrow.
"Go home. That's your last warning."
"Or what?" Jake sneered, shoving her at the shoulders, causing her to stagger back a few paces. "You'll hit me? You'll set your mom on me?"
Emerys held her arms up in defence, but Jake got carried away.
He shoved her.
Hard.
Emerys fell back, hitting her head on one of the dock's posts.
Everything instantly went black.

"I'm not sure what happened. I just found her by the docks." A male voice said.
Emerys' eyes fluttered open, squinting at the bright lights.
Her hand instantly found the back of her head, her arm feeling a tug of something.
The blurring faded and she saw a drip imbedded in her skin.
"What happened?" Her voice was croaky.
"Em, darling." Her mother's voice sounded.
The girl looked to her left, seeing Jocelyn grab her hand.
"Mom..." Emerys gave a faint smile, attempting to sit up, but to no avail.
"Don't move, honey. You hit your head pretty bad." She said, touching her daughter's shoulder. "Mr Jones found you and brought you in."
Emerys looked to the right of her bedside, seeing the man her mother was talking about.
"Thank you." She nodded.
Mr Jones looked at her, sceptically.
"Are you alright, Emerys?" He asked.
"I have a headache." She groaned, going to touch her head again before remembering the IV. "Where am I?"
She looked out of the window behind her mother, seeing nothing she recognised.
"You're in Storybrooke hospital, darling." Jocelyn replied.
Emerys frowned. "Where's that?"
Jocelyn gave a nervous glance to Killian.
"Maine, sweetie. We've been living here for almost a year." She said, attempting to hide her slight panic.
"What's the last thing you remember?" Killian asked.
Emerys wracked her brain, thinking so hard that it was making her head throb.
"Jake..." She mumbled. "We broke up. We were having an argument or something; I can't remember what it was about."
Jocelyn sighed.
"That was this time last year, Em. We moved to Storybrooke, you go to school at Storybrooke High as a senior. Your dad's the Principal. I'm the Sherriff. Mr Jones is your English Lit teacher. Your friends are Ruby, Regina, Zelena, Belle, Alice and Robin, plus a couple of others I haven't met yet. You work at a diner called Granny's."
Emerys simply looked at her mother, confused.
"I don't remember any of this." She said.
Killian began to get scared, though he hid it with humour.
"Not even me? I'm your favourite teacher." He chuckled, though his eyes were a big giveaway. It was just fortunate that Jocelyn wasn't looking at him.
"No... Sorry." Emerys began to feel really bad.
Killian felt like bursting into tears.
He'd lost the love of his life.

"The doctor doesn't know when her memories will come back. They could come back in a minute or they could take months, if they come back at all." Jocelyn told Killian. "Thank you for bringing her in, Killian. I really appreciate it. But you should probably go home now."
"Yes, of course, Sherriff. I just wanted to make sure she was okay." He gave her a small smile.
"Thank you. I'll make sure my husband gives you and her other teachers updates." Jocelyn said.
"Thank you. Take care." Killian waved slightly, taking one last look at the now sleeping Emerys before he took his leave.

As soon as he got in his car, Killian broke down into tears, leaning his head on the steering wheel.
Emerys had forgotten all about him. She'd forgotten that she loves him and that he loves her.
Everything she'd grown to appreciate over the last year was now gone and there was nothing he could do about it.
