"Can you do me a favor?" you muttered to your room-mate, Soobin, as you gently stir your coffee. You glance at his way, he's busy doing his research for his thesis.
You waited a few seconds for him to reply but he didn't. Guess he didn't heard you. You sighed before sipping on your coffee. You have come into a realization that this is a stupid idea.
"And what favor is that?" Soobin finally responded but didn't even bother to look at you.
Huh... he heard me. You sip on your coffee while you're having a short and rushed debate between asking Soobin or just drop the topic. You sighed, deciding to drop the topic but your mind reminded you the reason why you have to ask Soobin such favor.
Soobin thought you didn't heard him so he repeated the question again but only this time, he finally looked at you. "And what favor is that, Y/N?"
You sat beside him at the couch, your grip at your mug tightens every second. Soobin looked at you in confusion, waiting patiently for your answer.
"Hmm?"
"WillyoupleasepretendtobemyboyfriendatJune22nd?" you muttered inaudibly, nervousness and shame evident in your tone.
Because you didn't said your response properly, Soobin scrunches his eyebrows in confusion. "Will you what? Can you say that again? But only this time, in a way that I can hear and understand it properly?"
You took a deep breath before saying it in an audible way. "Will you..." you began, pausing slowly to take note of Soobin's reaction.
"Please..." you continued. "Pretend to be my boyfriend at June 22nd?" you say and Soobin left his mouth slightly ajar.
"I'm gonna what?!"
"You heard me," you say, shrugging your shoulders as if you said something minor. "Will you please pretend to be my boyfriend at June 22nd?"
When you were young, your mother taught you that if you want something from someone, you should ask nicely and say the magic word 'Please'. You applied this lesson to literally every routine of your life, mostly to get candies.
You'll always say please in a tone your mother couldn't possibly resist but when she said no, you turned the tables. "But I asked nicely! I also sais please! Caaaaan I haaaave one caaandy pleeeease!!!!" you'll whine endlessly unless you hear your ears' favorite sound, your mother's sigh of defeat as she mutters "fine" and gives you candies.
Now, you applied your mother's lesson in the situation you're in. You're desperate to get the candyㅡSoobin's agreement to pretend that he'll be your boyfriend at June 22nd but you can tell by his reaction that you won't be getting the candy.
"Why would I pretend to be your boyfriend? That's insane!"
And that answer to that question is: Expectations.
Now that you fulfilled both of your parents and your own expectations to become a doctor. Your parents and the whole family are now expecting you to date someone, preferably someone who's in the same field as you.
These expectations driven you to follow them and be the woman that they expect you to be. You became a person who follows others' hearts instead of their own. You don't want to fail anyone, you don't want to disappoint the whole clan and hear negative comments about you the whole reunion so here you are, desperately trying to find someone who is willing to pretend to be your boyfriend.
"It's only for a night, Soobin! A night! And I swear you'll never have to do it again!" you whined. "Unless my family likes you." you murmured under your breath but thankfully, Soobin didn't heard it and if he did, he'll probably won't pretend to be your boyfriend.
