I roll my eyes and put the equation on the board
"Aye great job"
"That was so easy. Come on give me a hard one"
We continue to do practice problems on the board and the rest of our team comes in
"Ready for the big day" our supervisor/coach says
"Super ready i can't wait to win"
"Aye good spirit" he high fives me and we all laugh
"Alright the competitors and judges will be here in an hour so we have some time to practice still. Also if we do in fact win I have a big announcement"
"Ooo are you going to tell us who next years captain is going to be?" One of my teammates Taylor ask
"Maybe maybe not. But that is not our priority right now. Our priority is to win. Right team"
"Right!" We all say at the same time
"Okay go in your areas and practice"
We all break off and me and Zach go back to our area
We are in charge of all the geometry equations and problems
Not to brag or anything but we are really good

We continue to practice and practice and practice until I look at the clock and see we have to start in 5 minutes
I turn towards the crowd of people that have come in and I don't see Jonah anywhere
"Of course" I whisper to myself
Why would he show up
He's way too "cool" for math competitions
I decide to call him and see if he's showing up
"What's good" he says answering the phone
"Where are you" I ask getting right to it
"What do you mean"
"My math competition... you know the one that you promised me you would come to. Where are you"
"Oh yeah sorry babe my mom needed me to help her with something"
"Seriously I thought she was on a vacation"
"Yeah but um she just got back"

Suddenly I hear something strange in the background

"Seriously Jonah you're smoking. i can't believe you"

"i'm really sorry" he says with no apologeticness
"no you arent. goodbye jonah" i roll my eyes and hang up the phone

"yeah everything's just peachy" i bitterly say
