we take a picture and our coach starts to make an announcement
"thank you for coming and appreciating what school is about. we have a special announcement for our team specifically. next year our current captain is leaving and moving on to better things. therefore we need a new one. and so we do in fact have one. Kylie Summers"

i shyly walk up and he shakes my hand
"welcome to leadership. everyone congratulate your new leader"
everyone says congrats and i smile saying thank you
"well have a nice day everyone!"
everyone heads out of the school but I run up to Zach
"ZACH! OMG IM CAPTAIN!" i shout and he laughs hugging me
"i know and guess what"

"i may or may not have written a letter to the coach saying how i want you to be the captain and we may or may not have had a team meeting without you voting for you"
"aw Zach that's the nicest thing anyone's ever done"
"jonah?"
"ha he doesn't do things for me but i don't care about him. right now i'm just ready to go home and celebrate with myself. speaking of, people want you" i motion across the room to his parents and sibling who are staring
"oh yeah well have fun... celebrating"

we hug and he walks away to his family
i pick up my phone and call my parents
they answer right away and i immediately start talk
"mom! dad! guess what!"

"we won our math competition! and, and IM THE CAPTAIN!"
"wow honey that's amazing i'm super proud"
"thanks dad. um when do you guys think you're going to be back?"
"we don't know but we hope to be back before summer."
"oh well as long as you come back."
"we will for sure. now you need to go get some rest okay. i know you're happy but-"
"i get it mom. well goodnight guys i love you"

they hang up and i head out to leave

right when i get home i go straight to my bed
today was a long, exciting, but also disappointing day
exciting cause we won and in captain but disappointing because jonah didn't come and instead ditched me to smoke with his friends
but whatever you know what they say
i'm a strong independent woman and i don't need no man
