It was dark stormy night in the forest. The trees about her cast scary shadows with their gnarled darkened branches, which barely prevented the rain from coming down on the rabbit's small body. Her black hair plastered to her head as her short fluffy tail puffed out in fear. She hugged herself tightly and kept walking hoping to find somewhere warm to rest. She cursed her luck ruefully as she held back angry and sad tears after her coat was stolen from her. The thief had been a terrifying wild cat, though it had been too dark to determine its actual race.
The cat cornered her and as a child raised by a priest, she did not beg for her life, she only fell to her knees and prayed to the gods that they would welcome her to their domain. While she did, she felt the predator stare at her with that crimson red eyes that shined in the moon light. The little rabbit had finished her prayer, but had remained on her knees with her hands clasped under her chin. She only opened her eyes when she heard a rustling of leaves, and she looked to see another wild cat come alongside the first. The rabbit's heart brimmed with hope believing that they would fight and she could scamper away during the turmoil, but her hopes were dashed as the two predators began whispering to each other. Then again... was the first asking to let the rabbit go?
"We don't need anymore food," the second yawned, earning a glare from the older one. "Let's leave her." His lazy eyes scanned the kneeling rabbit. "Though maybe we could take her clothes for our pet, they look warm enough..."
"I prefer him naked than clothed."
"So you wish him cold and miserable for the next few months? I had hoped you wanted him to learn to love and appreciate us, but I see you just want an unwilling slave to play with." He waved his hand dismissively. "Fine, kill this one and drag in another dead thing to stress our pet out with..."
Octavia flinched. The boy's face wrinkled into a cringe as if stricken and he looked to the doe once more. He studied her for a moment before finally speaking again. "Remove your clothing, rabbit..." And so all but her slip and boots were taken from her, and since her tunic had had long sleeves and a hood she hadn't thought to pack a cloak for her journey. Her long black ears flatten against her skull as the rain began to pour harder. It became increasingly difficult for her to stop her shaking and for a few moments she found herself huddling against a rough barked tree. She whimpered and rubbed her frozen silk black arms and begged the rain to stop. As if the cruel weather had heard her, the wind picked up and seemed colder. She fell to her knees with a mournful cry and fought back her tears. She would freeze to death now, no doubt about it. What started as a quest for enlightenment will end with her having failed what must have been a test from the gods. No no, she couldn't think like that! Her gods weren't cruel beings! They wouldn't subject her to a test far beyond her limits; this was an act of the evil spirits surely since she'd entered this horrible forest and perhaps was hidden from view of the holy. If she survived then she would probably be rewarded... maybe...Fatigue washed over her and she found herself panicking as her eyes closed.
It was warm and she felt as if her entire being was embraced by it. She thought she was in heaven until she heard the crackling of a fire and light danced on her eyelids. She opened her blue eyes and gazed at the blurred image of the large campfire. There was a large figure sitting to the side stirring a small kettle. The doe studied the figure, but her eyes didn't seem to want to clear no matter how many times she blinked. She tried to bring her hands up to rub them but found that she was completely buried in heavy pelts. Her mind rebelled for a moment, as being anywhere near the furs of other animals was against her religion's laws, but then again so was refusing the kindness of others. Her thoughts were interrupted when a hand suddenly palmed her forehead, covering her eyes in the process. The hand was soft, and just as warm as the pelts and the doe found herself nuzzling the palm. The hand moved to caress her cheek before moving to lift her head from the floor, and a bowl was pressed to her lips. She took a sip of the thick broth, and her eyebrows furrowed when she tasted tiny bits of meat. She didn't bother moaning over how it violated her teachings, she was hungry and even then there wasn't much meat to begin with. The bowl was emptied quickly and she licked up any drops clinging to her lips as her head was once more rested on the floor. The figure went back to sit next to the fire and pulled out a bag from behind her. Even with her eyes still blurry, the rabbit could tell that it was her bag the woman--at least it looked female.
