Emma's POV
"What do you mean how did I know? I didn't know that was gonna happen. Was I supposed to know Sam would cheat on her?"
"No, but it's just really ironic."
"Can you keep a secret, Emma?" Mack's stare was so intense, I could feel him looking through my soul.
"Yeah, I can."
Mack scooted closer to me, only inches away. I could feel his breath on my neck as he spoke.
"I have something that Sam, Nate, and even Claire can't ever know."
I could feel the goosebumps rising through my skin, "And what might that be?"
"Alyssa is my cousin, and she knows I want Claire."
He scooted back to where he previously was, a huge grin spreading from ear to ear.
"So you basically got your cousin to try to break Claire and Sam up on purpose, so you could magically come to her rescue and hope she would fall in love with you?"
"Yeah. It's working, isn't it?"
"Not anymore," Claire was standing at the bottom of the staircase; her hair still wrapped in a towel, arms crossed tightly against her chest. She was wearing a pair of pink running shorts and a tank top I knew she had as backup in her purse.
"Claire - uh - how long have you been there?" Mack was speechless.
"Long enough to know it's time to go back to Sam's. Emma, let's go."
She grabbed her stuff immediately as I walked her out of Mack's house.
"Claire, are you okay?"
"Yes. Can you call Nate to come get us though? I really don't know if I will make it to Sam's without having a meltdown."
I immediately dialed Nate's number. he answered quickly.
"Babe, where the hell are you?"
"I'm at the corner of West and Main Street at a coffee shop. Will you pick us up? It's cold, Claire's hair is wet, and she's about to burst. She needs to talk to Sam now."
"She can't..." his voice started to trail off.
"What do you mean she can't?"
"He doesn't want to talk to her. He knows he fucked up and he can't face the fact they're over."
"But they're not! She needs to talk to him now! We all need a big fucking talk! She's not dumping him!"
"What?"
"Pick us up now and I'll explain on the way back to Sam's."
After waiting inside of a coffee shop that was near Mack's house, I saw Nate's car pull up. Claire and I ran out as we got too worked up explaining what Mack had said.
"Wait, he hired Alyssa to lure Sam in?"
"Yes!" Claire and I speak at the same time too often.
"We need to hurry before Sam leaves the house."
When we got back to Sam's house, Claire ran in first, screaming for Sam.
By the time Nate had left and brought us home, it had only been about ten minutes. Sam was nearly wasted.
"Nate, what the hell? Why'd you bring her back?"
"Sam, you better shut the hell up before the alcohol turns you into the douche bag you're known for at parties," Nate was already fed up.
"Sam, we need to talk, but I'm not gonna talk to you until you're sober enough to remember this conversation," Claire spoke calmly, calmer than I expected.
"Why? I fucked up, I know that. You don't need to tell me that you don't love me anymore."
"I do love you, Samuel. I know that it wasn't your fault. It was Mack's. We'll talk about this if you stop drinking and sober up. Go to bed. I'm not speaking to you now about it."
"I'm not going to bed unless you go with me. I hate sleeping without you."
Drunk Sammy was smooth.
"Fine, Sam. If that's what you really want, I will. Just please be nice to me for now before I really get angry with you."
He pulled her by the waist and kissed her gently, "No promises," he smiled so wide.
I knew Sam's drinking has always upset Claire because of how mean he became, but the way she was dealing with him made me realize she was serious about talking to him in the morning; she really did want to be him. She was never this calm with anyone after all she's been through today.
"Hey, Em?"
"What?"
"Thank you. Thank you for somehow getting that out of Mack at the right time. Just thank you for being my best friend." She cracked a small smile before dragging her drunken stupor of a boyfriend upstairs to his room.
Nate and I sat on the couch talking about how it was after I went after Claire.
Next thing I knew, I heard a huge thump and yelling.
I got up quickly yelling for Claire but Nate pushed me back down on the couch as he ran up instead.
If he lays one fucking hand on her... He will mean nothing more than Tyler.
