Malkia had been quite busy over the last three weeks. The midterms were a headache especially now that she was no longer practicing with Luke. They had decided to go their separate ways after that first week and that was that.
She barely saw him around and that was good for her because it gave her time to get completely over him. She felt certain that she didn't harbor anymore feeling towards him but she was skeptical that it was all due to the distance.
One person she was sure she had feelings for was Ryuu but she was keeping her distance from him the same way she was keeping her distance from Luke. She had a few reasons for this.
1. He was a distraction and her mother would kill her if she was not in the top three, new school or not. She knew by her weekly and monthly reports that she still had a long way to go, so many of her classmates got perfect marks.
2. She needed to be sure of what she was feeling, she didn't want to be affected by her physical reaction to him but she had decided in the three weeks that she had spent keeping her distance that her reaction to him told her more about her feeling for him than her heart ever could.
3. She didn't want to be that girl, the girl that jumped from friend to friend like she didn't care what she did to them. She wanted to give Ryuu and Luke a chance to heal.
Ryuu hadn't tried to bother her at all in the three weeks so she was surprised to see him approaching her like he had been waiting for her when she stepped outside the school building that last Friday after Midterm exams ended and Midterm break started.
"There you are," he said, he sounded breathless.
"Here I am," she said looking at him warily "what do you want?" her words sounded much colder than she had intended them to be.
She saw his eyes dim for a second but he still smiled at her and said "I just heard from Luke that you two are done,"
"And? We've been done a while." she looked at him incredulously.
"Right, right," he seemed to be looking for the words to say, he was obviously excited by this news but he wasn't receiving the reception he had pictured in his head. Luke had told him that they had broken up the day after she had been to his place, the day when they had had a heart to heart and she had looked at him like she loved him, that was the first time she had looked at him that way and he didn't dare to look into it because he was happy to have that the last memory he had of her. He had been cutting his loses all this time, he was sure not to run into either of them, it was much harder with Luke because they shared a class but he had managed to hear anything about them - until today.
Luke had gone up to him after their exam and told him "So aren't you going to go after her? I gave up on her for you,"
"What are you talking about?" he had asked, his heart was already beating much too fast with anticipation.
"I'm not with Malkia, I thought you might go after her but here you are!" Luke was uncharacteristically exuberant.
"What? You guys aren't a thing?"
"For over a month now," Luke said even though he knew exactly how many weeks it had been, he wanted to mask his hurt, to mask his lingering feelings.
"I had no idea," Ryuu said getting up from his seat.
"Yeah," Luke said turning to go.
"And you wouldn't mind seeing us together?"
"I would, but I'll endure for you," Luke said with his back turned and then turned around to add "I'll also be there when you let her down,"
"I will never do that," Ryuu promised because he saw in his friend's eyes just how much he wanted her as well.
He took off running to catch her after that, he knew it was meaningless to look for her inside the school buildings, so he came to the front gates.
"You and I hadn't really started either," he said to her now.
She looked at her feet and then back into his eyes "I guess not,"
He held her gaze, waiting to see if she would say anything, if she would make it easier for him to come on to her, if she felt anything at all. He needed something to tell him that he wasn't wasting his time, though he was sure he would waste it regardless.
"Would you want to? Start?" he asked her.
She looked down again and he felt his heart become heavy as the answer became obvious. She would of have come to him if she wanted to be with him, he should have known what that meant. But he was such a fool for her.
But he decided to stay there and hear her say no. And then he'd bug her until she gave them another chance, a real one this time. What was he if not persistent?
She moved closer to him, she was closer than she had ever voluntarily been so it caught him off guard. But the thing that left him completely surprised was the look on her face when she finally raised her face to look up at him, she looked shy as she bit her lip and he was sure she was blushing even though her cheeks barely betrayed that.
"I've been thinking," she said still looking into his eyes "how annoyed I was that you kept your promise."
"What promise?" he asked feeling his mouth dry up. He was just as affected by the closeness as she was, just as intoxicated by her smell and all the things that made her, her.
"You don't remember? How you promised to wait for me to ask you to kiss me?" she moved even closer and it made him forget where he was, he no longer heard the noise of all the students running past them, of all the cars taking flight and hovering off, all he heard now was how loud his heart was beating and how sultry her voice was when she spoke the next words "Will you kiss me?"
He was too shocked to do anything, so he just stared down at her as her eyes moved from his eyes to his lips.
Malkia wasn't confident but she thought she had given herself enough time to be sure and she couldn't be more sure than she was when she saw him standing there the way he used to over a month ago when this was their norm, she had missed those days terribly. And she had spent all those weeks with her thoughts altering between her studies and him. She had thought of so many different aspects of him, her most pressing one was how well he kissed and how much she had missed it. There were times when she felt like she needed her brain to shut down and she craved the sweet bliss that contact with him provided.
She was well aware they were never going to be perfect, she knew that they would do a lot of bickering because they were so different and they had two completely different outlooks and experiences but she just couldn't wait for all of that to be her normal once more.
So she stood on her tip toes and reached up with her arms so they wrapped around his nape and then placed her lips on his so that her life could be like that again.
They kissed, it was gentle and smooth at first but like always their bodies tended to react intensely when they locked lips it ended up feeling heady so they pulled away to avoid doing anything embarrassing in front of the school.
They were both catching their breaths, they had kissed far longer than either of them had realized.
Ryuu looked down at her, he had his arms wrapped around her waist and he said with a smug smile on his face "Told you you'd ask me to kiss you,"
"You're such an idiot," she said playfully shoving him before she said "just do it again,"
