"Mama, can I just stay home today? Please, I need a break." Malkia said, she looked worn out and she had dark circles under her eyes and that went to show just how tired she was because of her complexion, dark circles under her eyes were rarely noticeable.
"Stay home? Have you seen your grades?" Malkia's mother, famously known as Mama M after the first initial of both her children was a short woman with a beautiful yet stern face that her daughter inherited. Like both her children she had big eyes that usually caught other people's attention. "You have really beautiful eyes," people would often tell them.
"Mama I've only been there for a week, their teachers have different expectations so obviously it will take time for me to adjust." It didn't help that the school had weekly tests, daily quizzes and assignments that were all graded and then reports were handed to parents so that they could have a weekly assessment of their children's academic performance.
"That is exactly my point, you need all the time you can get so go!" Mama M turned around to watch past the living room at the two bedroom doors before she called out in a harsh tone "Baba Maki! Mika!" It was time everyone left and she got to her house chores before she went outside and set up her 'restaurant'.
"Dear, could I stay home today," Baba Maki said peeking outside his and his wife's bedroom door; unlike his wife he was simply called by the name of his first born mostly because she took after him behaviour wise, she also did more martial arts than her brother ever could. He was a simple man, he had a face that looked mostly scared except when he smiled and showcased his dimples, the dimples that he was proud his children had inherited.
Mama M did not need to answer him, the look on her face told him that he needed to go to work. Maiko did not even bother to ask to stay; he didn't detest the place he spent most of his time as much as the other two did.
Malkia used to be like her brother up to a week ago when she was forced to transfer to another school due to the new laws that had been released by the United Nations of Uith that required all the Elite schools to offer scholarships to exceptional students in the regular and public schools.
Malkia was the top of her class and she had headed the Form Three Annual Exams in their region, this prompted her school to suggest her for the scholarship and well it wasn't like she could refuse such a great opportunity when it was thrown right in her face. She thought it was more of a slap now.
Not with a mother like hers she couldn't.
Malkia was quite optimistic when she joined Alkai Elite School. She was finally going to see how the other half (less than a quarter would be more accurate) lived. But her first day didn't go so well.
She was walking down the hall on the Secondary Building with a couple of the other beneficiaries, some of which she knew from school fairs and inter-school competitions. Alkai, being the most Prestigious Preparatory School in the entire planet had only taken a single beneficiary for each grade so there they were, six new students that felt instinctively bonded by their lack of wealth.
