Jane Burnette has a bunch of kids helping her with yard work. The kids don't like her much. Then they dig up a bunch of dead birds in her flowerbed, all of which still have their meat and feathers and must be several thousand years old.
These birds are the birds that fly off to the mountain once every thousand years. There, they scratch off a few specks of dust, then fly back. Once the mountain is worn flat to the ground, that's one day of eternity.
Jane is the way she is because she or her family has been there since the beginning of eternity, helping the birds on their way to the mountains, and giving them a proper burial when they return and die. She's basically running and eternity bird sanctuary.
Not sure what else might happen, but it's a cool starting point.
