"Hey, Casey," Alexis answered her phone after checking the time. It was just past 5 o'clock and she was about to get started on her homework."Hey, Lex, are you busy?" He asked, followed by a crash in the background.
"What the hell was that?" Alexis asked, laughing because she knew was probably caused from his clumsiness.
"Uh, nothing. Sadie just knocked something over, so are you busy?" She rolled her eyes at his eagerness.
"What do you want, kid?"
"I was kinda hoping you'd take me to the cages?" He asked, putting on his best innocent voice.
"Don't you have anyone else to be your personal chauffeur?"
"Please, Lex? No one else will hit with me," Alexis groaned loudly and fell back onto her bed.
"You owe me," She grumbled, hanging up just after hearing him cheer.
She was already wearing spandex and a sports bra, so she just threw on a t-shirt that she had cut the sleeves off for practice along with her tennis shoes. She grabbed her new bat, actually happy for a chance to break it in before the season starts.
Alexis walked into the kitchen and grabbed a Gatorade out of the fridge before popping her head into the spare bedroom that her mom used as an office.
"I'm going to pick up Casey and go to the cages, is that alright?" Alexis asked, knowing she'd say yes.
"Yeah, that's fine, will you be home for dinner?"
She shrugged, "Probably not, do you want me to bring you anything?" Her mother simply shook her head and Alexis was off.
She walked down the path that was placed between what she liked call "the ditch" and the garden - if you could even call it that. As she walked, she made sure to watch the ground the entire time; she'd had bad experiences with snakes slithering out from the grass and did not need a heart attack. When she safely made it to her car, she plugged in her phone and set it to her driving playlist before heading off.
It was about a 15 minutes drive to Casey's, which was ridiculous because the cages were right by her house. The only reason she agreed to this was because she was dying to swing her new bat.
When she made it to Casey's house, his horrible older sister was standing in the driveway. She walked up to Alexis' window, making her feel extremely uncomfortable.
"Are you having sex with my brother?" Candace asked, being very up front.
Alexis rolled her eyes and nodded, "Oh yeah, we were actually planning on fucking in the back seat of my car right here, you know, spice things up a bit?" Candace clearly was not happy with the sarcasm dripping out of Alexis' mouth.
"You just better pray I don't find out," She snarled. Alexis couldn't resist the urge to roll her eyes again.
"No, I'll make sure you're the first person your brother tells when we hook up. He'll probably call you right before it happens just so you're up to tabs on what's going on in his life." She huffed and stormed off into the house just as Casey was walking out, his bat bag in hand. Alexis could tell she gave him a dirty look because she saw him roll his eyes before sliding into the passenger seat.
"Your sister really is a charmer," She grumbled and he laughed.
"Hey, you were friends with her at one point."
"Back when I was an innocent, naive child from Michigan," Alexis said exasperatedly and he rolled his eyes again.
"You're from Detroit, you weren't innocent," She shrugged and he continued, "What did she say anyway?"
"She was pretty keen on knowing all about your sex life, too bad it's nonexistent," She said, nonchalantly, throwing her hair over her shoulder and backing out of the driveway.
"If you weren't driving right now, I would hit you."
She simply laughed and kept driving and he took her phone, scrolling through the music.
"It still makes me so sad that you're my best friend and have such a mediocre music taste," He sighed.
Alexis rolled her eyes, "We have the same music taste, dipshit."
"You listen to One Direction," He pointed out and she shrugged. "They're good."
They finally made it to the cages and Casey grabbed their things while Alexis went to go get the coins. The batting cages weren't exclusively cages. There was also laser tag, go carting, mini golf, and an arcade, but they only came to hit.
It was a school night, so the place was practically empty and they both took a cage for themselves. She watched him put the coins in and enter the cage with a helmet on with his bright orange bat in hand.
Now, Casey was basically a little brother to Alexis, but he was hot. He was around 6'2 and had perfectly tanned skin. Light brown hair, almost blonde in the sunlight with bright blue eyes, he was definitely a stunner and she had to keep his ego down from all the underclassmen girls that were undeniably smitten with him.
Alexis stepped into the cage next to him, marked clearly that it was a softball cage. She put the used, smelly helmet on her head - not caring about where it had been or what it smelled like, simply because she was doing what she loved and gross helmets were part of the deal - and held her new bat with pride. She pushed the button to start the machine and suddenly there was a softball flying towards her. She bent her knees and lifted her elbow and did what she was good at, she hit.
~
After a solid 20 minutes of hitting, Alexis was beat, and turned the machine off to take a break. Casey was already sitting on the curb when she exited the cage and sat down next to him.
"How'd you do?" She asked, resting her head on his shoulder to catch her breath. She felt him shrug beneath her head.
"I got my frustration out, I guess."
"Whoa, wait, Avery?" He nodded like it was no big deal that his girlfriend of almost a year dumped him.
"Why?"
"I guess she was more into James, but he wasn't going for it. He's too good of a guy," which made Alexis chuckle.
"James is a dick," He just mumbled his agreement before they sat in silence.
Two guys came stumbling out of the go carting area, laughing and tackling each other. Alexis lifted her head off of Casey's shoulder to get a better view, because she wasn't going to pass up looking at cute guys. One of them had white hair. Not like blonde or gray from old age but like dyed white hair. She thought she saw an eyebrow piercing but couldn't tell from the distance, although she knew he was attractive, it was an instinct that girls had. The other one was tall, like taller than Casey tall, with blond, spiky hair and blue eyes that she could see from the distance. They were both wearing black skinny jeans and vans, with some form of ripped band t-shirt. The tall one looked in their direction and she wasn't sure if it was her imagination but she was pretty sure he winked.
"Damn."
