Darkness had quickly painted over the once bright, blue sky, replacing it with a navy backdrop and twinkling stars. The air was crisp and cold as the wind blew viciously. I had to pull out my black sweatshirt from my backpack for more warmth, but it still was no match for the bitter winter weather. I thought about lighting a cigarette, but figured the wind would overpower the flame, so I chose not to. Instead, I pulled out my knife and switched it open, twirling the blade between my fingers. The moonlight reflected off the small weapon, and gave it a ghostly glow.
I thought back to the robbery earlier today, specifically John. The memory still haunted me. It was like he lost all control over himself. Like he had gone crazy or something.
"Hey." A familiar voice pulled me out of my thoughts. "You might want to be careful with that thing," Todd said, referring to the blade I was still twirling in my hand.
I chuckled softly. "Thanks, but I think I got it under control." I looked over my shoulder and smiled, patting a spot next to me, and inviting him to sit. Todd made his way over to the rooftop ledge I was sitting, and plopped down next to me. He dangled his legs off the side and leaned back on his hands.
"Whatcha thinkin' about?" He asked, while he stared off into the distance.
I shrugged. "Nothing."
Todd chuckled and shook his head. "Come on, D," he sighed. "I've known you for a long time now.. I know when something's on your mind."
I tore my eyes away from the starry night sky, and looked at Todd. He must've noticed because he returned the look.
Todd tilted his head to the side and gave me a soft smile. My gaze faltered and I looked away, sighing. "I'm just.. thinking about earlier, about John." Todd nodded knowingly. "What the hell happened back there?"
"Honestly," Todd paused. "I don't know.. He's been acting out lately."
I pushed for an answer. "What do you mean?"
"I mean- he's been robbin' places on his own, and breakin' the law a lot more than he used to," Todd answered unsurely. I furrowed my eyebrows, not really understanding what that meant. "I've been tryin' to get Erica to find out what's up with him, but every time I ask she always says 'It's personal'," Todd continued.
I rolled my eyes. "She probably knows."
"Yeah, well, you know how those two are.. Always so secretive," Todd said.
"Won't be so secretive for long," I stated, determined to figure out what was going on. Erica is one of the worst liars I know. She always cracks under pressure.
Todd must've read my mind because he immediately objected. "I wouldn't get involved in this is I were you," he lectured. "Just let 'em have their secrets."
I rolled my eyes. "Seriously, Todd?"
"I'm serious, Diana. If Erica is sayin' it's personal, then you should just leave it be," he answered in a slightly annoyed tone.
