As Ponyboy and I turned a corner, sharp winds blew cold air in our faces. The winds swept through my hair hastily and sent shivers throughout my body. The two of us had been walking around aimlessly throughout the town. Ponyboy decided to skip school for the day even though I mentioned to him that Darry is probably going to be pissed. Ponyboy just shrugged it off and said he'd deal with him later. The last time I'd been at the Curtis house was a few days ago, and I could tell by Ponyboy's uncaring manner that something must've happened between the two brothers since then.

"What do you want to do?" Ponyboy asked, breaking the silence that previously consumed us.

I shrugged and kicked a rock on the sidewalk, watching it bounce across the concrete before kicking it again. "I don't know."

"Well, we could go to Dairy Queen," he said as more of a question.

"You got money?" I asked. Recently, I've been running low on cash. I'd have to start stealing or pickpocketing again.

Ponyboy nodded. "I've only got a couple of dollars, but that should be enough."

"Alright, then," I said.

The two of us continued walking down the sidewalk in the direction that I assumed was Dairy Queen. It was a relatively quiet afternoon. Most teens were still in school, but there were a few who were ditching like Ponyboy.

I remember when I used to go to school. After my father left, I started to ditch a lot and just meet up with my friends in Harlem. I guess that was kind of my downfall in life that turned me into the 'rebellious criminal' I am now. Of course, I've always known that my friend group were bad influences, but I didn't mind. In fact, I actually liked it. The thrill of stealing or doing something illegal has always intrigued me. The best part about committing a crime was when you're on the run, but you know that you're going to get away with it.

I remember the first day I met Todd, Erica, and John. We were all still young and innocent, unaware of the trouble we would be destined to get into in the future.

"Damn it!" John exclaimed. "I only got two cents and this chocolate's worth five!" Erica snickered from beside him and elbowed him in the arm.

"I don't even have money," I frowned, showing my new friends my empty palms.

This morning my mom and I got into another argument. As all our fights go, she drank too much and blamed me for my dad's disappearance. Unlike other times though, I stormed out of the apartment and ran off towards the train station. I couldn't stand to be in the same place as her anymore, so I had to leave and run away for awhile. After I snuck onto a boarding train, I just took a seat and let it take me wherever because anywhere else was better than home right now. I ended up hopping off at a stop in Harlem, where I met Todd, Erica, and John while I was wondering through a candy shop. They seemed nice and they were around my age too. I needed a distraction for a little bit anyway.
