part four
My legs moved quickly as I ran through the dark night. The full
moon shone above, along with the twinkling stars. I wanted to look up at the sky and try to distract myself from all that was happening right now, but I couldn't lose focus of what is important. My boots stomped on the ground and echoed in the streets. I struggled to breathe because I had been running for what felt like hours now. I desperately wanted to stop and take a break, but I had to keep moving. The town was eerily quiet and dark. Each store that was usually open during daytime was now closed with the exception of a few drugstores. Street lamps stood at every corner, only lighting up a small space before disappearing and leaving me in the darkness. My eyes darted in every direction, but I was running blindly. The longer I ran and couldn't find Dallas, the more my spirits were starting to dampen. I wasn't sure where he was or where he was going. He was upset right now—we both were—but he was acting out of emotion. I needed to find him before he did something stupid. The last thing I wanted for him was to spend another year in jail.
Gunshots sounded loudly in the distance, causing me to flinch and stumble over my own feet. My stomach dropped and my heart felt like it had stopped beating. Another gunshot rang from the same direction. "No.." I spoke to myself quietly.
I picked myself up and starting running again, faster than I had before. I sprinted in the direction that I had heard the shots. I silently wished and hoped that it had nothing to do with Dallas, but I knew that it probably did.
I ran past a small drugstore. Inside, I could see an old man behind the counter. He was on the phone, speaking frantically to whoever was on the other line. As I ran by, I noticed a gun laying on the counter. I debated on going inside and questioning the man, but that would make me look suspicious. I didn't want to get involved with him, especially since he had a gun. I didn't want to waste anytime when I could be trying to find Dallas.
In the distance, I saw a figure leaning against the wall, speaking into a pay phone. I moved swiftly towards the figure, hoping that it would be Dallas. The person hung the phone back up, ending their call and the running off into the street. Behind me, I could hear the deafening blares of police sirens, growing louder and more urgent as the cars approached. It didn't take long for me to catch up to the person I had been chasing, but unfortunately, the police had also caught up to us as well. Red and blue lights flashed sporadically as cop cars swarmed and surrounded the area. Police hopped out of their vehicles and pulled out guns before hiding behind the open doors of their cars.
"Dally!" I called out.
Just as he turned around, a single gunshot rang throughout the air. I stumbled slightly but Dallas caught me and held me. His arms wrapped around my waist as I laid my head against his chest, struggling to catch my breath. When we pulled away, I frowned. Dallas stared into my dark eyes as they filled with tears that I wasn't sure I could hold back. His brows furrowed in confusion as he spoke softly, "Diana?"
