Sophie laid in her bed, watching the second episode of Thirty But Seventeen on her computer. She was curled up under her blanket, hugging her favorite plushie as she moped about how damaged the main characters were.
When she finished the episode, she sent a text to the new number she had in her phone, wondering if he had watched it too.
Sophie
Did you watch the second episode???Kevin
Who is this?Sophie
V funnyKevin
:)Kevin
Yeah I watched it(( Incoming Call from Kevin ))
Sophie sighed. She was trying to avoid a phone call, knowing his smooth voice would get to her. Over text, she had plenty of control over herself. She couldn't say the same over the phone.
"Hello?" she answered quietly, not in the mood to talk loudly.
"Do you think he's gonna look like that throughout the whole show? Because I'm gonna root for the nephew if he does."
Sophie couldn't help but let out a small giggle. "Honestly I'm already rooting for the nephew. Yoo Chan is cute."
"Okay seriously, who's cuter, him or me?"
"Him."
Kevin gasped. "Really?"
Sophie bit her lip. "No."
There was silence and Sophie grimaced, placing her face in between her knees. I shouldn't have said that. Why did I say that??!
"Well you're cuter than the main character so I guess we both win," Kevin finally replied. She could practically hear his smirk over the phone as she sighed with relief.
"Okay but that scene where she was on the playground, I think I literally felt my heart breaking."
"Yo me too! It was so awful! Like someone let her into their home!" Kevin exclaimed. Sophie giggled again.
"Or she could have just stayed at the hospital..."
"They were lying to her there! I wouldn't have stayed either!"
"It's free food and a cute little place to stay."
"Okay but who's paying the bills?"
Sophie gasped. "Oh you're right. Who is paying the bills if her aunt and uncle are gone? Didn't they say something about some random guy visiting her? I don't think it was that doctor guy."
"Agreed. Okay mysterious guy who maybe pays the bills, I'll add that to the list of things that don't make ANY SENSE."
Sophie laughed and shushed him. "Stop yelling, it's too late to yell."
"What'd you do today after you left my house?" Kevin suddenly changed the topic.
"Spent time with my best friend Liam. I promised him that I would hang out with him today."
"Liam, huh?"
"He's gay," Sophie answered rather quickly. She grimaced again, wondering why her first thought was to tell him about Liam's sexuality.
"Did you have fun?" Kevin asked.
"Hm?" Sophie hummed into the phone.
"With Liam, did you guys do anything fun?"
Sophie couldn't help but smile. "Yeah, it's always fun with Liam. We just drove around and ate some food, listened to music. Every so often he would rant about how he doesn't have a boyfriend. It's funny."
"Sometimes I wonder why I don't have a boyfriend," Kevin replied. Sophie's eyes went wide and her lips parted. His hair is perfect, his fashion sense is impeccable, he flirts with her but probably as a joke, HOW COULD I NOT SEE THAT HE IS GAY??? OH MY GOD SOPHIE LEAVE IT TO YOU TO START GETTING A CRUSH ON THE GAY KID YOU WORK FOR!
"But then I remember," Kevin continued. "that I'm straight."
Sophie's head fell back on her pillow as she closed her eyes. Why did her heart drop so low when she thought he was gay?
"You still there?" Kevin asked with a chuckle.
"Hm? Oh yeah I'm still here. I really thought you were gay for a second."
Kevin laughed. "Do I come off as gay?"
"I don't think so. But when I thought about it a second time around..."
Kevin chuckled again and Sophie couldn't help but smile too. "Well I'm straight. Very straight. I even have a crush on this girl right now. She's super cute. She cleans my house or whatever."
Sophie gaped. I'm sorry, did he just confess to me?
"What are you doing tomorrow?" Kevin asked before Sophie had time to speak.
"Um...I think I'm babysitting. Wanna come?" she asked jokingly. She wasn't a huge fan of babysitting, but it was an easy way to get money.
"Yeah, where?"
A little taken aback, Sophie took a second before telling him the address.
"Do you want me to meet you there or...?" Kevin asked, his voice trailing off.
"I can pick you up," Sophie replied. She was still surprised that he was even going with her.
"Who's the kid?" Kevin asked.
"My friend's little brother. Her name's Haley and she has a single mom so they don't really get to spend a lot of time together so she asked me to watch her little brother while her and her mom go out and have a little day together."
"Awww, that's cute," Kevin replied. Sophie smiled.
"I've met him a few times and he doesn't really do much. He's like 12 so he's at that age where he just kinda sits in his room and plays video games. I just have to make sure he eats and check on him every so often."
"Works for me."
Sophie yawned, pulling her blanket up closer to her while her phone lay on the pillow next to her, the call on speaker.
"You sound tired," Kevin stated. "You should get some rest. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Don't watch the next episode without me," Sophie answered, her eyes droopy. She yawned again and Kevin chuckled.
"Deal. I'm hanging up now."
He hung up the phone and Sophie let her eyes close, drifting off to sleep.
