Sophie groaned and rolled her eyes. Is he kidding? she thought. I need time to think everything through.
After staring at her screen for a few seconds, Sophie sighed and answered the phone call.
"What, Kevin?" she asked harshly. She hadn't meant to sound so rude, but maybe it would help him understand to not keep bugging her.
"Sophie, please just listen to me," Kevin begged. The hurt in his tone of voice made Sophie's heart ache. She stayed silent, giving him a gateway to talk. "I miss you. I want to sit down and talk about everything. I'm still confused as to what really happened and I really think we should go through it all together."
Sophie sighed. "I miss you too," she responded honestly. Kevin closed his eyes, soaking in the glimmer of hope.
"Can you meet me at the picnic tables in the park by your house? Whatever time works for you."
"I can go now," Sophie told him. "But I can only stay for a little while because I really need to help my mom."
"Got it," Kevin replied. "Thanks, Soph."
They hung up the phone and Sophie got off of her bed, walking to the bathroom. She was wearing a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt, which she didn't plan to change out of. She pulled her hair into a bun and washed her face and brushed her teeth quickly before heading down the stairs.
She walked into the kitchen, where her parents were seated with coffee and their computers at opposite sides of the table. They both looked up at the sound of footsteps approaching the room, and smiled at their daughter.
"I'm going to meet up with Kevin in the park. I'll be back in time to set up for the barbecue," she said. Her mom set her coffee down and removed the glasses from her face.
"When was the last time you saw him?" she asked.
"A week ago when I went to pick up my car. He tried to talk but his parents just told me to take some time off."
"And you're okay with seeing him now?" her mother continued.
Sophie shrugged. "I guess we'll find out. I wanna see what he has to say. If it doesn't work out, then that's okay too. But I figure I should at least give him a chance to explain himself."
"That's very mature of you," her dad joined in, typing away at his computer.
"Thanks," Sophie replied. She leaned down to kiss her dad on the cheek before walking over to give her mom a hug. "I'll see you guys in a little while. Wish me luck."
"Good luck!" they called out in unison. Sophie took a breath and pulled her phone out of her pocket, texting Liam as she walked out the back door of her house.
