"So at the restaurant we're meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Richards, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver and Mr. and Mrs. Chapman, whose daughter is Lindsay, who you met earlier."
Sophie nodded along as Kevin spoke, grimacing when he said Lindsay's name. Kevin took note of the change in the atmosphere and squeezed Sophie's hand, since his was conveniently already holding hers.
She looked over at him and smiled, taking a deep breath. "I'm okay," she whispered. He nodded and looked up at his parents in the front of the car.
"Hey mom do you have some chapstick?" Kevin asked.
"Yeah, here," she handed back her pocketbook, leaving Kevin to get what he needed. "By the way, Sophie, I forgot to tell you that I love that dress. I feel like I've seen it somewhere before. Is it name brand?"
Sophie looked up at her and bit her lip. "Actually I'm not sure. The dress was a gift."
Mrs. Moon nodded. "Ohhh, okay. It's probably name brand. I swear I've seen it somewhere."
Sophie nodded with a smile and looked over at Kevin, who was still applying an unreasonable amount of chapstick. Sophie laughed and reached over, taking it from his hands.
"My lips need to be soft," Kevin pouted.
"I'm gonna be sliding all over them, relax," Sophie whispered back. Kevin smirked and took the chapstick back, wiggling his eyebrows at Sophie.
"You want a kiss?" he asked, puckering his lips. Sophie pushed his arm with an eye roll and faced the window, getting a laugh out of Kevin.
After a few minutes, the family and Sophie arrived at the restaurant, and Sophie felt her stomach knot. She took a deep breath and then released it, trying to calm herself down.
No big deal, she told herself. They're just people. Stupid rich or not, they're just people. I can connect with people.
They pulled into a parking spot and all stepped out, and Sophie looked around at the other people walking into the restaurant in their fancy outfits as well.
She looked down at her dress with a smile, knowing that she at least did well in that department. Kevin walked around the car, offering his arm to Sophie. She smiled and obliged, the two of them walking in unison.
"You really look beautiful," Kevin told her. "That dress is stunning on you."
"Thank you," Sophie smiled.
"Where'd you say you got it?" Kevin asked, looking at it again.
"Oh I—,"
"Kevin, Sophie, keep up," Mr. Moon called out behind him. Kevin and Sophie walked faster to catch up with his parents, entering the restaurant together.
"I'm kinda nervous," Sophie whispered honestly. Kevin looked at her and cracked a small smile.
"You shouldn't be. Just be yourself and they'll love you."
The four of them were apparently the last ones to arrive, and were shown to their table by the hostess. The Richards, Olivers and Chapmans were already seated, each of them having conversations that intertwined with one another.
Lindsay looked up as the four approached, smiling in Kevin's direction. Sophie felt a pit in her stomach form from Lindsay's expression. She didn't know what it was about the girl, maybe her resting bitch face or just the way she held herself, but she didn't like the way she acted like Kevin belonged to her.
They all sat down, Sophie seated between Kevin and his mom. Kevin sat next to Lindsay, who automatically put a hand on his arm and greeted him with a big smile.
"You look absolutely delicious tonight," she whispered in his direction, holding onto his forearm. Kevin, starting to get uncomfortable, smiled slowly and removed her hand from his forearm.
"Thanks, you look really nice too."
He didn't see Lindsay all that often, but when he did, she always seemed to get a little possessive. He also found it weird that a girl as pretty as her was single for as long as he knew her.
He shrugged off the discomfort and took his other hand to Sophie's leg, rested on top of her napkin. She was already halfway into a conversation with Mr. Oliver, who had asked her if she knew anything about sailing.
Ironically, Sophie's dad bought a sailboat when she was six, and the two of them always spent as much time as they could out on the water. Sophie absolutely loved it.
"Do you know what kind of model your dad has?" Mr. Oliver asked as Kevin placed his hand on Sophie's thigh. She contained her smile and put her own hand over Kevin's, squeezing it slightly.
"A Hanse 400. He bought it in 2006 just after they released that model. He was really excited about it."
Mr. Oliver raised his eyebrows. "That's remarkable. Great model. Do you have a picture?"
Sophie grimaced. "Actually, I left my phone in the car."
All of the adults at the table turned to look at Sophie, making her stomach drop as she wondered if she'd said something wrong. She squeezed Kevin's hand nervously, hoping he would save her. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, Mr. Oliver chuckled slightly.
"She's a good one," he spoke directly to Kevin. "Keep her."
Sophie's body eased against the chair as she let out a breath of relief, giving a small smile. Kevin smiled as well, looking over at Sophie, his cheeks slightly pink.
"Really, I never see kids these days without a cell phone in their hands. Lindsay's always walking around with hers," Mrs. Chapman spoke. "It's quite refreshing to see something new."
Lindsay shot her mother a look that Sophie knew would get her put six feet under if she gave the same look to her own mother. She was absolutely repulsed by this girl, shocked that someone so evil could exist, but kept her facial expression even, not wanting to make a bad impression with the rest of the table.
Lindsay turned her body, shrugging off her nasty expression and replacing it with a smile.
"So, Kevin, what happened to that girl you used to go out with?" she asked. The entire table turned to look at her, all with shocked expressions, but Lindsay pretended not to notice. "I liked her. What was her name...Lacy?"
Sophie's face went white.
