Sophie walked outside in a black and white horizontal striped dress she had in her closet, Liam's favorite article of clothing in her wardrobe. She was told to dress nice by Kevin, so she did her hair and makeup and then dressed up.
She got in the front seat of his car and he swallowed, staring at her. "You're gonna kill me," he told her. She giggled and leaned over to kiss his cheek.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"My house," Kevin replied. "My parents and Stella went out to eat but I told them I needed some quality time with my friends while they're here from Korea so the boys and I worked out a surprise for you."
"Oh no," Sophie let out. Kevin laughed and reached one hand over, leaving the other to drive. He took Sophie's hand in his own and squeezed it, intertwining their fingers. Sophie sighed with a smile and covered their hands with her other one, looking out the window.
When they arrived at Kevin's house, she took a deep breath before following him inside. Everything seemed to be normal, until Kevin said the words "Mom, Dad, I'm home!" and Sophie's heart dropped.
"You said they went out to eat!" Sophie whisper shouted. Kevin squeezed her hand and looked over at her with a reassuring nod.
"Relax, everything will be fine."
They walked into the dining room, Sophie's stomach dropping with every step. She felt her cheeks heat up and her hands begin to tremor as they approached the next room. She sighed in disbelief when she saw who was seated at the dining room table.
"Kevin! We missed you!" Hyunjae exclaimed. Sophie's face dropped as she looked over at Kevin, who was holding back a laugh. Hyunjae was seated at the dining room table, a pillow case over his head like a wig, and an apron around his waist. He gasped, grabbing Sophie's attention. "Is this your new girlfriend?"
Sophie swallowed and looked at Kevin again. "Am I expected to play along?" she asked. Kevin nodded and she rolled her eyes with a sigh, getting into character. "Hi Mrs. Moon," she said, walking over to Hyunjae to shake his hand. "I'm Sophie."
Hyunjae giggled. "It's so nice to meet you! You're so pretty! Honey! Get in here! Kevin brought his girlfriend!" he shouted into the kitchen. Sophie raised her eyebrows as she watched Sunwoo walk into the dining room with a pair of glasses and a suit jacket on over his usual clothes.
"Oh, you must be Sophie," he said. Sophie nodded and shook his hand as well. "Nice to meet you. Isn't my wife just beautiful?" he asked, seating himself next to Hyunjae.
Hyunjae giggled again and Sunwoo placed his arms around him to give him a tight squeeze. Sophie watched in amusement and embarrassment before looking over at Kevin again.
"Why don't we sit?" Kevin asked. "Did you guys make something to eat?"
He pulled out a chair for Sophie and then sat next to her as Hyunjae nodded, taking a sip of the drink in front of him. "Our chef is making the food," he said. "I helped with the preparations, which is why I'm wearing the apron."
"You can take that off now dear," Sunwoo said. Hyunjae looked at him in disbelief.
"Do you think I can't live my own life?" he questioned. Sunwoo raised his eyebrows.
"It was a polite suggestion."
"WELL IT FELT RUDE."
Sunwoo rolled his eyes and pretended to chug the drink in front of him as if it were alcohol. Sophie stifled a laugh as she watched the two pretend to shun each other.
"Mom, Dad, can we not do this tonight? I just want to introduce you to my girlfriend," Kevin said, completely playing along. Hyunjae scoffed and Sunwoo sighed, both of them nodding.
