Chapter 10

One week later. . .

Josephine opened her eyes, and was immediately enveloped by a wave of pain she arched her back her mouth open in a silent cry, "Josie!" Phoenix appeared above her holding down her shoulders. "Stay still you'll only make it worse, Josie!" he shouted, she looked at him and started to steady her breathing. "In and out, in and out, keep it up." he told her, she calmed down. Phoenix put the back of his hand against her forehead, he knit his eyebrows and grabbed a cloth soaking it in cold water. He put it on her forehead, a wave of relief washed over her, "That should help."

"P" she started.

"You shouldn't strain yourself, you know what the doctors have told you." she put her hand against his cheek.

"Phoen. . .okay?" she said most of her words cut out again, Phoenix smiled taking her hand understanding the jist of what she was trying to say.

"I'm fine and so are the others, you healed us." he told she smiled, Phoenix's eyes started to water he held her hand with both of his bringing her hand to his forehead. His shoulders trembled and he bit his lip, "Forget about me and the others and think about yourself for f*cks sake!" he shouted.

"I told you before that I'd stay by your side! Why do you always fight by yourself when I'm right here?! Is it because I'm useless or is it because I'm to weak to fight by your side! Why Josie?!" he cried, her grip tightened on his hand he raised his head tears trailing down his cheeks. She wiped his tears away. She opened her mouth trying to speak once more, not even a single word made it through. She bit her lip hard enough to draw blood.

"I'll get some a pen and paper." he said standing up she grabbed his wrist, and shook her head opening her mouth in yet another attempt.

"It's. . . . not true, I've never" blood trickled out the corner of her mouth.

"Josie stop."

"thought of you. . . . . . as useless or weak" the blood trickle thickened.

"I'm sorry about what I said, please don't push yourself!" he yelled tears on the edge of his eyes again.

"I've always thought. . . . . . . . . of you as strong." she said sweat slid down her face. "I don't want. . . . you to get hurt. . . because of me." she panted.

"Stop."

"I do it because. . . . . . I want to protect the. . . . . person that I love. . . ." she states Phoenix's eyes widened she sat up.

"What're you-" she held his hands. 

" But it seems. . . . that my actions are. . . . . . . hurting you. . . more then any. . . . physical injury. . . . . and yet. . . . I keep doing it. . . . . . I'm so sorry for. . . . . everything." she said tears flowed down her cheeks as she coughed into her hands. She took her hands away blood spattered on her palms, she dropped her hands onto her lap and started to silently sob. How can I be so stupid? I cause her trouble when I try to help her because I love her. It's the same both ways, we protect each other while hurting ourselves in the process in order to insure the other's safety. Yet I always end up causing her the most, he hugged her, her sobbing came to a halt.

"I'm sorry" he started to apologize his voice shaking with sadness his hand on the back of her head. "I'm so sorry, I do the same thing for you it's an endless cycle between us." I don't want to but this might be the only way, he hugged her tighter. "Maybe we should stop-" she pushed away shaking her head rapidly back and forth, her tears endless.

"I want to. . . . . be with you. . . I don't think I can-" she states, "live without you." she confessed.

"Josie." she takes a deep breath.
