Lauren
"Its been raining for days now." Lauren spoke to herself.
She's been looking out the window for over an hour now. Its just something about the rain that really soothed her. Being a police officer meant a lot of stress for her. It wasn't an easy job, she knew that. She stretched and slowly got up from her chair. She thought it was best to stay late to help work on the case. Earlier today still gave her chills. She knew that whoever murdered that woman had to have issues. Cutting up someone's body just isn't normal. Killing in general wasn't normal.
She sat back down and pulled out pictures taken at the crime scene. She kept staring absently at the pictures of the dead body. It shocked her that much. As she went through all the pictures once more, something caught Lauren's attention. She saw a bracelet on the wrist of the amputated arm. She saw some markings on it but couldn't make out what it said. She was frustrated that she couldn't make out the markings, and threw the photos down on her desk.
"Shit." She mumbled under her breathe. Today had her all messed up.
"Everything alright? Why are you here so late when you're in no position to be here Johnson?" Scottson said as she came from behind.
Lauren turned around in her chair so quick that she thought she would fall. "I wanted to see what I could do to help." She knew she wasn't in no position to say that, but it was worth a shot.
Scottson leaned on the edge of her desk. "Look here lady, you're only a highway patrol officer," She paused as she tapped her nails on the side of the desk. "What could you possibly do to help?"
The way the she said those very few sentences silenced her. Lauren didn't know what to say to that. Yes, she knew she was only a highway patrol officer, but she still wanted to help. She doesn't even know why she wants to help anyway. It was just something that intrigued her. She honestly didn't think this through, so she had no idea how she could be of use.
Scottson took notice of her silence and continued. "See? Now why don't you head on home. It's raining heavy outside."
"But I-"
"No butts, just head on home. It's already late. Whatever you have to say leave it for tomorrow." With that said, Scottson stood up and left.
Lauren just sat back in her chair with a sigh. She wasn't ready to go home just yet. She really had no choice since her shift was over. She gave out a long sigh and decided it was for the best to leave. She cleared her desk and put everything away before grabbing her keys. She stood up and headed for the door. As soon as she stepped out the building, she became drenched immediately.
It was raining really heavy outside. It was to the point you heard loud drops of rain slamming against the concrete. Lauren picked up her pace. She never really cared for the rain, so getting drenched like how she was bothered her. She didn't want the rain to give her a strange smell. Like those strange rainforst smells--the smell of earth. When she made it to her car, she pulled out her keys. Just as she was about to insert it into the lock, the key slipped out her damp hands. The keys slid under the car.
"You have got to be kidding me! At times like this!" She said loudly in frustration. She was already wet as is.
She got down on her hand and knees and looked under the car. The keys were close to the center. She stretched her right arm as far as it would go. The strain on her arm made her pull a muscle, but now wasn't the time for her to complain. She shimmied her body closer to the car in desperation. It was raining hard, so her eyes were getting blurry with rain water. Her index finger brushed against the tip of the key. Just in one motion, she flicked the keys in her direction and grabbed them.
"Finally." She gasped out of breath. That really took a lot out of her. She already wasted too much time.
Lauren got to her feet quickly, and wiped the rain out her face. She went to insert the key again, but only to get interrupted.
"Hey Lauren! Is it okay that I call you that?" Shouted a very familiar voice.
She turned around to see no other than James himself. He had a coat on with a hoodie over his head.
"Hey James. Shouldn't you be home at this hour?" She thought everyone went home around this time.
He flashed a smile and wiped rain water out of his eyes. "Well I was just heading out to my car and happened to spot you out here. Coincidence right?"
She flashed a smile of her own. "Yeah well I'm gonna get going. You should too."
She reached to insert her key once more, but his hand stopped her. She turned around to face him with a confused look. What does he want now? She thought absently to herself.
He let go of her arm and took a step back. "I was wondering if you would like to accompany me to get a drink?"
