BEATRIZ

I hate breakfasts. I hate breakfasts with them to be more specific.

Walang pasok ang university ngayon dahil may emergency meeting ang mga faculty. Unfortunately I woke up extra early kaya naman naabutan ko pa sina dad and kuya sa bahay.

I sat down beside my mom as I stared at my brother holding his tablet and my father who was holding a card that looked like invitation.

I mumbled a low "good morning" but I didn't hear a reply. I rolled my eyes and just stirred my coffee.

"You want some ham, anak?" Mom broke the silence as she offered me the plate.

I politely declined and shook my head.

"I'm good, mom. Thanks." I continued to look down since no one was saying anything.

I quietly sipped my drink and checked my phone for messages or emails from my professors.

Dumadami na rin kasi yung mga requirements and tasks na kailangan ko ipasa.

"Beatriz," Napatingala ako at tumingin ki dad. "Put that away. What did I tell you about using your phone in the dining room?"

I frowned and scoffed.

"Bakit si kuya? He's using an iPad right now—"

My dad dropped the invitation card on the table firmly slightly glaring at me.

"He's dealing with work, eh ikaw? What's your excuse?"

My hand gripped on my cup tightly. I wanted to answer him so bad but I stopped myself. I looked at my mom as she stared at me apologetically.

"Well, since we're all here I want to inform everyone that we're going to attend a celebration tomorrow."

I quickly stared at my dad and shook my head.

"Dad, I can't. Sobrang dami ko pang kailangan gawin. I have projects to make and I have tons of upcoming tests on Monday."

My dad chewed his omelette slowly, he then looked at me with a blank expression.

"You have today and Sunday for that. You're smart, so two days will be enough for you."

"But dad—"

"Ano ba, Beatriz? Bakit ba lahat nalang ng sinasabi ko kinokontra mo? We are going to that party, nakakahiya sakanila kapag hindi tayo kumpleto."

Dad clenched his jaw and sternly looked at me.

I sighed and looked down again.

"All I'm saying is I don't think it's necessary for me to go. Bakit ba kailangan kasama ako ano bang pakialam ko sa birthday ng ka-golf ni dad?" I faced my mom.

I turned around as my brother scoffed.

"Why are you even creating a big deal out of this? Masyado kang nag iinarte."

"Last time I checked I was only talking to mom and dad." I replied.

"It's just one night, Bei." Sabat ulit ni kuya kaya mas lalo akong nairita.

I banged my fist on the table.

"That's not my point! The thing is hindi niyo ako pinpakinggan, you never do kayong lahat."

He was about to answer me back but we were all interrupted by the screeching sound of a chair.

I looked to my side and saw my mom standing up while shaking her head.
