Chapter 24

Carson's POV

Saying what I planned to do out loud to my friends, make the reality of my decision seemed more real. I hated what I was about to do and I had to remind myself why I was doing it, to stop myself from changing my mind.

"Are you sure about that, man?" Michael was the first one to speak up.

I nodded my head. "It's the only way to ensure her safety."

"Are you going to tell her? You know, about Oliver and what you think he's planning?" Jayden asked.

"Yes, of course. I'm not going to keep anything from her." I replied. "And besides, it will be easier to explain why we have to do this. It won't be for long anyways."

When I thought about it, it really was a perfect plan. If Oliver knows we are not together, he will leave her alone and he'll just have to deal with me. The part that I didn't like was that I was letting Oliver controls our lives and because of him, I won't get to be with Kayla. I had thought about just pretending that we aren't together, but he would know because he's smart and as he made clear earlier, he's watching us.

Micheal nodded in agreement at my earlier response. "Yeah, it's best she knows what he's up to."

I suddenly got up from the seat I was sitting on. "I'll see you later, guys," I said. I wanted to go home and asked Kayla to come over. It's best I did this right now before I changed my mind.

Kayla's POV

As soon as I left my last class today, I went straight to Carson's apartment. He had called me earlier telling me to come over and by the tone of his voice, I could tell that it was very important.

However, I didn't know how serious it was until he opened his door to let me in. I was met instantly with the look on Carson's face. He seemed to be struggling internally and he has a great deal on his mind.

When I entered his apartment and he closed the door behind me, I instantly got his attention and reached for his hands. "Carson, what's wrong?" I asked quietly.

He finally looked at me and took a breath before shocking me with his words. "I think we should take a break."

Stunned speechless for a while, my hands slipped from his hand. "Why?" I asked after a found my voice. "Is there a problem?"

Carson quickly shook his head and clarified. "No, of course not. It's Oliver. I think he's planning something as his way of revenge to me." He explained. "If he knows we are together, he will easily catch on to how close we are. I know he's going to use you and I won't let that happen."

I took a while to let what he just said soaked in before I comment. "So you want us to break it off because of Oliver?" I asked trying to wrap my head around the whole thing.

He nodded. "Yeah, but only until he has been stopped and he isn't a threat to you anymore." He explained.

I thought about it for a while, then asked. "How can you be sure of Oliver's intentions? Maybe he's just messing with you." I know I didn't know Oliver, but it just didn't make any sense to me. It would be immature of him to take his revenge on me just because he lost to Carson. That would be taking it to the extreme and that would be excessive, even for Oliver.

Carson was shaking his head. "You don't understand. He wants to hurt anyone I care about. I picked up on what he's planning. He didn't even hide it, he made it clear when I spoke to him today." Noticing my hesitation, he added. "This isn't easy for me to do right now, but I will do anything to prevent him from hurting you."

"Carson, take it easy. I think you are letting this guy get to you. Maybe this is what he wants. For us to focus on him, while he continues to control our lives. We don't need to take a break. Let's not give him that power over you." I tried to change his mind.

"Just trust me on this, Kayla. I just have this bad feeling. We can't be together right now; just until I figure out how to deal with this situation."

"Carson, I understand why you would be cautious, but doing this because of something he might do is basically you letting him run your life," I said, but Carson remained quiet. "There must be some other way. Maybe if we talk to the police and get a restraining order, he will leave us alone."

Carson shook his head again. "Babe, I don't think that's a good idea. In fact, that's a very bad idea. A restraining order won't stop him, it will just anger him even more. Oliver isn't someone you mess with. Doing that will make it worst. You have no idea what he's capable of."

I sighed quietly, still not liking this plan. "I think this is silly. We can't let this crazy person dictate how we live our lives." I said shaking my head at the absurdity of the idea.

"I know, but we don't have any other choice."

"Yes, we do." I countered. We stood there quiet for a while and then I don't know what came over me, but both of us was shocked by my next words. "If that's your final decision, then this doesn't make any sense anymore. If you're willing to break it off because of what Oliver might do and not willing to fight for our relationship, then maybe we should just call it quits completely."

"What? No, Kayla...that's not what I want. I promise I will get this figured out. Just give me some time to work this out." Carson said reaching for my hands. I stepped back a little and shook my head.

Carson dropped his hands at his sides and said quietly. "Babe, please don't do this."

"I'm sorry, Carson. I've already made up my mind. I don't want us to live like this." I started to feel my eyes filled with tears.

He paused for a while before he spoke. "You know I will do anything to keep you safe." He then took a deep sigh and nodded his head curtly. "If that's what you want. Okay then."

"Okay," I said and turned away from him and left his apartment.

As I left his apartment, a feeling deep down in my stomach told me I just made a big mistake.
