"you should really wear your hair down more often," riley says to me. she smiles as she begins to pull the scrunchie out of my hair.

"don't," i say as i put my hand on top of hers. "it's hot, leave me alone."

"then cut your hair," she shrugs as she backs away.

i pull the scrunchie fully out of my hair to redo my bun.

"you're funny, i'd look more like an egg than normal." i roll my eyes as i wrap the scrunchie around my hair. i pull out a few tiny hairs to make myself look less ugly.

riley laughs as we begin to walk into school. "i'm thinking a pixie cut!" she teases.

i laugh. "now you just sound stupid,"

we make our way through the hallway and riley spots her boyfriend, easton.

"i'll see you at lunch!" she says and runs off to him. he greets her with a smile and a quick kiss. he looks past her and at me and gives me a small wave.

easton and i haven't exactly always been on the best terms. i think both of us silently agreed to be civil with one another just to make riley happy.

i look around to see if any of my other friends have arrived yet. obviously emily wouldn't be here for another few weeks since she's still on vacation. on the other hand, cassie should be here. she's usually here before me.

as i'm looking around, i feel a body shoved into me. my bag and phone fall to the ground instantly. i stumble back a bit and i hear laughter from a group of guys across the hallway.

once i regain my balance, i'm able to clearly see who was shoved into me.

ethan dolan. my longtime middle school crush. completely over that now, but as i stare into his hazel eyes i forget why i ever tried to get over him.

"ethan, are you okay?" i hear a feminine voice. her eyes look between us two. "emma, hey! sorry about that." she looks at me with apologetic eyes. jen is a very hard person to hate. she perfect.

that's right. it's because he has a girlfriend.

ethan smiles up at her and gets up off the ground. "hey baby," he says to her and kisses her quickly.

i begin picking up my things that spilled out of my bag as quickly as i could.

"here, let me help you." ethan says. he bends down to help pick things up, but i was already almost done. "i'm so sorry."

i look at my phone screen and it's shattered.

"yikes," he behind pulling out his wallet. "how much to help repair it?"

i put the last of my things in my back and shake my head. "don't worry about it," i stand up. i look at the group of boys still laughing.

i walk over. "who pushed him?"

"you're bold," josh says.

josh is the stereotypical rich jock who thinks he owns the place. not a fan of him.

"i'll send you my bill," i smile sarcastically.

"and i'll pay for that and a night with you." he smirks the most disgusting smirk i've ever seen.

"you could pay me all the money in the world and i still would not touch you with a 500 foot pole." i say.

his smirk was now gone and was replaced by an annoyed look.

i see my friend cassie walk through the door. i was so grateful for her presence.

"i'm serious about that bill though, you owe me big time." i shout at him as i walk away.

"hello my beautiful and oh so wonderful friend!" i wrap an arm around cassie. she gives me a suspicious look. her eyes widen and she pushes me arm off of her. we come to a complete stop.

"what did you do?" she asks me.

"what?"

she looks around. "and why are the football boys looking at you? why is josh giving you a death stare?"

my smile grows more. it gives me no greater joy than to know that josh is giving me a death stare.

"you're pretty," i change the subject.

"i'm late one day and you did something stupid." cassie laughs.

"okay, it's not stupid if he deserved it." i roll my eyes and take a sip of her coffee.

"what happened this time?" she asks.

"josh pushed ethan into me and then-"

"ethan?" she interrupts.

"ethan dolan." i tell her. "anyways, so then-"

"like your ethan?" she interrupts again.

"like jens ethan. stop interrupting me," i say. "so my phone screen shattered and ethan's all like 'oh i'll cover the repair' and i'm like-"

"i'm sorry, but ethan?" she interrupts for the third time.

"why are you so hung up on the ethan part?" i groan. "you're not letting me get to the best part!"

"i'm sorry. i'm not used to hearing you talk about him and not freak out. it hasn't been that long since you've stopped liking him."

remember when i said middle school crush? yeah, try middle school and two years of highschool crush.

"well, i needed to open my eyes and see that jen is just the perfect girl for him and there was absolutely no way that i was going to be with him. ever." i tell her.

"wow, that sounds kinda mature and.. sane." she replies. "are you okay?" she laughs.

i nudge her. "shut up,"

~

i was walking in between class and i hear my name being called.

"emma!" i hear a deep voice yell. he finally catches up with me and grayson smiles. "hey,"

i smile. "hey," i expected that he wanted something. grayson and i were really good friends for most of my life, but we haven't talked in about a year.

"i wanted to apologize for earlier. josh is a dick," he says.

i shrug. "no lies detected." we walk in silence. i know we're going to the same place, chemistry. "thanks," i say too long after he said anything.

"what?"

"for the apology," i say. "you didn't need to apologize."

"yeah, but i felt bad." he shrugs. "i don't know why josh always goes after you."

"probably has a secret crush on me," i joke and make kissing noises. we both start laughing.

we walk in the classroom and go to our spots. mine is unfortunately at a table with josh.

"give it to her," ethan says from next to me. josh looks at him and then to me.

he slides an envelope across to me and i open it up. there's enough money in here for me to buy three new pairs of shoes.

"josh, this is too much." i say and hold it back out to him. "i don't need all of this."

he rolls his eyes and grabs the envelope.

"dude," ethan says to him.

"i put that much on purpose. we- i mean i decided that since i was such an over the top ass that you should have some extra cash for a new dress or something." he says it in such a monotone voice that i think he rehearsed it.

"a dress?" i ask.

"or a new outfit for my party that's this friday," josh says and slides the envelope back over to me. "or for our first date." he smirks.

awkward josh is gone and asshole josh is back.

"think of how good i could treat you afterwards in my bed-"

"that's enough." ethan cuts him off. "sorry," he apologizes to me.

i take the envelope and put it in my backpack.

"no worries," i shrug it off.
