monday morning comes quicker than expected. i haven't heard a thing from ethan since the party.

i wake up to a text from grayson.

grayson: thanks for taking care of my brother

me: no problem

i wake up today and i feel pretty. the effects from the party continued to last throughout the weekend. i don't regret going to that party and that surprises me.

i shower and get ready for school. i begin to put my hair up but then i decide against it. i liked how i looked friday night with it down. i felt good. pretty.

~

"hey!" i'm greeted by grayson in the parking lot. he parked a few cars down from me. "i didn't get to tell you that you did good friday night at the game!"

"thanks! you played really well too," i say. i take a sip of the coffee i had in hand.

"and thanks again for taking care of ethan after the party. he wasn't supposed to drink," he says.

"don't blame that on him. he was having a rough night and needed a beer. i offered to drive him home and everything. he was responsible," i defend ethan.

"rough night? what happened?" grayson asked.

"i didn't want to pry. but he said jen left him? i don't know all the details." i shrug.

"what? like, left the party or broke up with him?"

grayson keeps asking questions as if i have any answers.

"listen, grayson. i don't really know anything. you need to talk to him," i say and keep walking even though grayson had stopped.

i spot ethan and jen shouting at each other at the end of the hallway. riley was standing near them with easton by her side so i joined them.

"anyone know what's up with them?" riley asks.

i shrug and drink my coffee. "no idea,"

i couldn't help but look over. they never fight, especially not in public.

"i don't want to talk anymore, ethan!" i hear jen say.

"why not? what are you not saying?" ethan replies.

"i've gotta go to class," she says and walks away.

he doesn't go after her and he doesn't watch her walk away. him and i make eye contact and i want to look away so badly, but i can't.

"you okay?" i mouth.

he doesn't say anything. he looks away and walks the opposite direction.

i sigh.

~

jen doesn't sit with ethan at lunch. instead she comes over to where i sit.

"can i sit here?" she asks.

"uh, sure." i say.

she doesn't say anything to any of us. she picks at her food and sighs every now and then. no one wanted to say anything, but someone had to.

"are you okay, jen?" i ask.

"why do you ask?" she questions.

i shrug. "you seem a little down, i guess."

she doesn't say anything and looks back down at her food.

"if you need to talk, i'm here if you need me." i tell her.
