"Dad, do we have to move? Everything is going fine here." We're moving. Again. "Caleb, I know you don't want to, but after your moms arrest we have to go. I've been transferred to a new law firm, I got you and your sister into an incredible private school, and the neighborhood we'll be in will be better for us."
We're moving to New York from Calabasas, California. I know I should be excited because I looked up the school and the arts, music, theatre, and photography classes are the best. Ravenwood High is a very prestige high school and I'm willing to go for the opportunities. I don't want to go because of my moms arrest. Before you ask, She didn't do it. My mom got locked up for bullshit. She'll be out in a few years but let's just say my dad being married to a criminal isn't exactly what the high class elite here would want to see. Moving would be a fresh start.
My sister isn't taking our mothers arrest lightly. She's locked herself up in her room for days. Her and Maya were very close. She's very sweet and high energy but currently it's like a dark cloud has settled over her.
It didn't feel real until we moved into our new home. Dad got us a 3 bedroom condo that was under construction during the summer so we were not the only people moving in. My dad had his own bathroom while my sister and I had to share one. We had a very spacious living room that has a nice view of the city. I was about to connect my speakers to my phone to start choreographing my own dance, that's when I heard my dad called me from the kitchen.
"HERE," he said shoving a $40 dollars in my hand. "Go get dinner and bring you sister with you" he said rubbing his hands through his partially gray beard. All day he'd been getting calls from Bently's Women Correctional Prison. He went to go visit my mom in prison before we left and told her that we were moving. She was not happy because it would be harder for us to visit her, but he already knew that. That's what he wanted.
I walked into Maya's room, she was practically settled. She was sitting on her bed with a black sharpie in her hand. "What are you doing?" I said looking at her. "First you wanna walk into my room without knocking and now you want to invade my personal space by being nosy as hell, GET THE FUCK OUT!" she screamed throwing the heaviest pillow on earth at me. "What the hell is your problem," I yelled back getting on my feet. "Do you think I want to be here," I said looking at her. "Dad said that I have to get dinner and bring your lazy ass with me," I said, waving the $40 in her face. She got up and slipped her crocs on her feet.
I grabbed the key and ordered us an Uber because we didn't know our way around here. We were not trying to get lost in this big ass city. When we got to the market we decided to go with tacos. The ones we wanted made us $6 short. I was about to call dad, when a tall dark skinned woman with dreadlocks handed us $10. I smiled at her and took the bill. I paid and when I turned back to thank her she was gone. "That was weird," Maya said while opening the bag nachos and shoving a handful in her mouth as I order us an uber home. I agreed with her and we made our way into the car and back home.
