____________________________I wait for mom in the car with Seth and he's talking about all the friends he's made at school. "Andrew has a cool spaceship bed, Leon has 3 girlfriends, Skylar is my girlfriend but I plan on playing with Kelsey on the swings today during recess. Oh and Jack has- ," I groan loudly, "Seth I love you but I don't care. Did you finish your homework?" He smiles, "You just don't care because I have more friends than you. You never talk about your friends, and yes I did do all of my homework." He continues to blab on about his friends and I lay my head on the dashboard.
Mom finally enters the car dressed in a nice asphalt grey suit. Her dreads are pinned up and she's wearing lots of jewelry. "Mommy you smell nice." She applies some lip gloss in her rear view mirror. "Thank you baby," She responds. She reversed the car and we are on our way. She drops Seth off and tells him to have a good day at school.
We continue the drive to my school. Ravenwood High is known for its academics and victorious athletic programs. They give out 70 scholarships a year for those going to college and was built in 1950. They give out 25 scholarships to urban students in the New York each year, hence how I was able to go. Ravenwood is a private school that looks nice when you enter the driveway but once you enter the building it's filled with mean girls, jocks, nerds, and any other cliques you can think of. After giving my mom the rundown of what the school is like, I expected her to be a bit rattled. She sat there calm and said, "Well I deal with you at home, I'm sure I can deal with them too!" She laughs at her own joke while I sit there unamused.
Mom got the job as Vice Principle and she was hoping to get the board to approve of her teaching a psychology class. She pulled into the driveway and I tried to unlock the door. I was fighting the handle and turned to face her. "Uh, the door?" She giggles, "I just want to know if you're actually okay with me working here?" I give her a hug, "Yes mom! For the millionth time I want you to work here!" She unlocks the door and I climb out. She stays in the car reviewing the notes she got and I walk into school.
I'm at my locker grabbing books and reviewing notes for a quiz. Logan taps my shoulder and starts talking to me. "Hey, have you seen Ace?" I shake my head, "Not since Friday, sorry" He sighs, "No worries, I just think he's still mad at me because of the game." I glance at my phone to see if I got a text from him. Nothing. "I'll let him know you're looking for him" He smiles, "Okay, thanks. By the way, we are totally failing this test. I heard Ms. Petersen is testing us on stuff that wasn't on the study guide." We gossip some more and he walks away to talk to Gary.
I glance over to my right and see Angelina practically sucking Caleb's face off. They pull apart and he whispers something to her. She giggles, kisses him again, and then notices me. Caleb continues to have a conversation with her and takes off his letterman jacket. She puts it on and he walks away. She whispers to her minions and struts down the hallway towards me. She stops and looks me over from head to toe. "Cute outfit, was goodwill having a sale?" I roll my eyes, "That's the best you could do?" She growls and gets closer to me, "Did you enjoy the show? I saw that you couldn't stop staring. I get it, my boyfriend's hot but try not to drool next time like the dog you are." She grabs the coffee cup out of Brittany's hand taking a sip. "Eww I hate pumpkin spice! You ordered the wrong one stupid" She uncovers the top, spits the coffee back in it and throws it at me. I stand there frozen in shock covered in a cold pumpkin spice latte. "See the outfit looks better and the little doggy gets something to drink." She turns and I hear her heels walk down the hall, her minions following.
People walk past me, staring and whispering. I look down at the binder I had in my hand and see that it's covered in coffee. All my work, ruined. The bell rings and the halls are empty. I grab my duffle out of my locker, slamming it shut. I walk to the single stall bathroom. I enter the stall and start to cry a little. I change into sweatpants and a tank top. I glance at myself in the mirror, wipe my tears, and shake my head. The long walk to the gym was filled with sobs.
