"Evie, no!" I yell, rushing over to my little sister who is currently walking towards the fireplace where she has already hit her head once in her life. I move as quickly as I possibly can to grab the tiny toddler and pull her into my arms. I let out a heavy exhale as I stare down at her as she giggles, finding the situation funny. I point a playful finger at her and she giggles even more. "You know you're not supposed to do that."
She throws her arms up in a dramatic manner. "But it's funny!"
"Oh, yeah, sure," I say, sarcastically, and set the little girl onto the couch next to my other sister. I let out a sigh and brush a hand through my dirty blonde hair that's flopping into my face. I turn to Rosa and shrug my shoulders as I plop down next to her. "it's so funny watching your sister get stitches in her head for the second time in a few months."
Rosa waves me off with a playful smile. "Right? It's hilarious."
Evie giggles from her spot on the couch next to Millie, who has headphones in her ears while her head bops to whatever she's listening to. I don't even think she notices what just happened, but it's not like she even knows that there's a world outside of her phone right now. I look up when I hear heavy footsteps coming from the kitchen and I hold myself back from rolling my eyes since I already know what's about to happen.
Mom rushes into the room, instantly turning her glare onto me as she puts her hands on her hips. "What's with all the yelling?"
"Evie was going towards the fireplace again. I was just telling her to stop," I explain myself, even though I shouldn't have to. I was just making sure my sister didn't get hurt, but of course, I get blamed for being 'too loud'. It's not like I expect anything less. I mean, yelling in your own house to protect your sibling is definitely an offense punishable by your parents.
"Well, you don't have to yell," she snaps at me, not looking happy at all. What the fuck was I supposed to do? Should I have just let my sister smack her head on the brick fireplace or risk being a bit too loud? It's not like Millie or Sammy haven't been louder today, but oh no, they never get in trouble. They're perfect little angels and never get blamed for anything. It's always my fault, even if I'm not in the room when something happens.
"I'm sorry, next time I'll just let her fall." Resisting to say something even worse, I hold my tongue between my teeth and clench my fists in a position that she isn't able to see. Mom's glare gets even harsher and I instantly avert my eyes, not needing to give her any more reason to be mad at me. The last thing I want today is to deal with that fucking closet.
"Blaine," Mom warns me in a low voice that has only ever been used on me. "watch yourself."
"Yes, ma'am," I whisper with a simple nod of the head. Mom doesn't even glance at her youngest daughter, who should be the one getting in trouble instead of me. Even if she is only three-years-old, she should know some sense of discipline, which she certainly doesn't. She's been in this house for two whole years and I don't think I've ever seen her be put in time-out or have any consequences for her actions.
I mean, I'm practically raising her at this point because Mom and Dad are 'too busy' to do anything. They shouldn't have adopted another fucking kid if they didn't have time to raise them. I love Evie, but I don't want to raise her for her whole goddamn life. I've already practically raised Millie and Sammy their whole lives and now there's just one more child to look after. How am I supposed to keep up with schoolwork, which has to be perfect apparently, along with a three-year-old child?
"Hey," Rosa whispers to get my attention. She takes me out of my train of thought and I look over at her to see a sympathetic smile playing at her lips, obviously knowing what I'm thinking. "wanna go out on the back deck and study there? Get some air, maybe?"
