After a hard, terrifying departure from my sisters, I'm on the road 'home' with Lukas and Paige. We had decided to come back in a week or so to pack up all my stuff and get my car from the house, but for now, I only have two backpacks filled with things I'll need. It's weird to have gone into the house that I grew up in now that I know that the first time I went there was after Mom and Dad took me away from my real parents. But now that I was in a car alone with my biological parents, it's weirder.
I sit in the back while Paige and Lukas are in the front, not saying a thing to each other or me. I could tell it's awkward for all of us and they were probably worried about me meeting their other children that're waiting for us at the house. And I'm definitely nervous to meet them because I have a twin sister? And a younger brother? And an older sister? It's certainly very strange to think about.
"So, Blaine," Lukas says while he exits onto the highway for a very long trip, I'm assuming. I don't know exactly how long it takes to get to their house, but I'm pretty sure it's long with how comfortable they made sure I was before they even started the car. "you're still in school? Detective Heath filled us in on some things."
I clear my throat before looking down at my hands that're gripping the blanket placed over my lap in a tight hold. They're clearly shaking, but thankfully the darkness in the car makes it hard for them to notice. "Uh, yeah, my mom and dad decided to... to um, start all of us in school later than usual. So I should've graduated last year, but since I started later, I'm still just a senior."
Now that I think of it, they started us later in school because they wanted to make sure that we were prepared to go into the public, right? They were training us as their kids and making sure that we didn't know about the kidnapping and we thought that they were our parents, right? I mean, they must've done something to make us forget about the kidnapping or something because I have no clue about it and apparently, I was three when it happened.
"Oh, okay, that makes sense," he says after some hesitation. He must've realized the same thing I did. "well, how is it going? Your senior year?"
"Uh, school's fine. I'm not the best at math, but I'm working through it." I look away from the silhouettes of their bodies that I can barely see and instead, focus on the buildings we're passing that all have huge lights to display their signs.
"Oh," he says, glancing at me in the rearview mirror before looking back at the road. "well, that's okay."
"Yeah," I whisper, occupying my eyes again by staring at all the cars that're whizzing past. I try my best not to glance at the couple in the car with me because there's this tension, this awkwardness, floating in the air between us. They're still acting like I'm some lost puppy that will bite them if they try to talk or touch me. But I'm actually a pretty tolerable person if they try to get to know me.
I can feel my phone vibrating in my backpack, probably from Rosa texting me, but I'm still angry at her. I specifically asked her not to tell anyone about the DNA results and the second I leave, she tattles to the principal about it. Like, what kind of best friend does that? She deliberately betrayed my trust and now, she's blowing up my phone every few minutes. It's annoying and she needs to just give me time if she ever wants to fix this friendship, which might never even happen honestly.
After about 30 minutes of Lukas driving, he takes an exit that seemed like there isn't anything down it, but I don't point it out. Paige instructs him to go somewhere and a few minutes later, we're pulling in front of a McDonald's that looks empty because of the late time. We all sit there for a few moments before Paige turns around to look at me with a smile. "Uh, so we assumed you were hungry and since it's so late, this is really the only thing open. Is this okay?"
