Prologue

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Shawn Carter, 42 years old

Skai Knowles-Carter, 20 years old

Marisa and Malcolm Carter, 3 years old

Zendaya, 20 years old (Skai's college roommate)

Jayson, 22 years old (Skai's boyfriend)

A/N: This story takes place about 2 years after the end of Be Without You, it's the beginning of Skai's junior year of college.

Prologue 

Skai's POV

I placed my hand over Jayson's and held back tears as we watched them lower his mother's casket into the ground.

I could tell that he had tears in his eyes but he was trying to be strong for his younger brother and sister, so I gently rubbed my hand up and down his back to comfort him.

This wasn't how we expected his life to start. He just graduated college a few months ago and during his first week at his new job as a high school English teacher, he got a phone call that his mom suddenly died of a heart attack.

Jayson and I have been dating since I was sixteen and his mom and I had gotten so close. This was so hard on all of us. Jayson's brother and sister are still in high school so they're going to live with his grandparents for now. He's been trying to keep it all together for the rest of his family but I know that inside he's a mess. 

I want to be there for him more than anything but it's so hard to know the right things to do and say. 

I just know that he's worked so hard to get to where he is now and his mom would be so proud. 

I hope that we can make it though this to come out stronger on the other side.
