the last thing daniel had expected when waking up that morning, was bumping into his ex at the mall. yes he was back in perth, his and her hometown, but he hadn't expected to see her there. one thing he quickly realised though, was that alexandra hadn't changed at all. she still looked like she always had. she still had that beautiful smile and gorgeous sea green eyes.

"you can't just break up with me like that alex."

"i can do what i want... and it's for the best."

"how is it for the best? we've been together for 7 years. do you not love me anymore?" alexandra's heart sunk at daniel's word. of course she still loved him, but she knew what had to be done.

"daniel," she tried but her voice was suddenly weak. "it doesn't matter whether i love you or not. we're not right for each other."

"how can it not matter if you love me. if you still love me you would wanna fight for me!" daniel's voice is ringing in her ears. "tell me you don't love me and then get out."

"i don't love." alexandra is on the verge of tears and all daniel can do is shake his head.

"get out." alexandra doesn't move, she's starting to regret what she decided. "get out!"

daniel noticed that alexandra wasn't alone, she was with a little girl. the girl was a cutie, he thought. maybe it was her niece. that's what he thought until he heard the little girl speak up.

"mummy, can i have a balloon?"

mummy? alexandra had a kid?

"yes, hazel. what balloon do you want?" god she sounded the same as well. he had missed her so much. it had been 5 years since they broke up and although he had told himself to get over her, he couldn't. he was sure they had been meant to be. he thought of her everyday and always had hope for her to come back to him.

"the one that looks like a honey badger," the little girl, who had found out was named hazel, said.

———

"mum, can i ask you something?"

"yes, of course." mama grace said.

"do you know anything about alexandra having a kid? i saw her at the mall today with a little girl, that called her mummy."

"i guess she had a child after you two broke up," grace tried but it was hard lying to own son.

"with who? do you know anything?" daniel catched on.

"i don't know anything." daniel knew his mum was lying. he could see it on her and hear it in her voice.

———

he didn't know why he did it but he drove to alexandra's house, hoping that she still lived in the same house. he knocked on the door, and within seconds the door was opened and he was face to face with alexandra holding the same little girl in her arms.

"hi, alex." he said nervously.

"hi, daniel." she said with a shy smile. daniel noticed and gave her a smile back, the smile she had missed so much, but she saw it on her daughter every single day.

"can i come in?"

"i guess you can, yes." alexandra moved aside to let daniel inside and closed the door behind him. after they had sat down at a table, she spoke again. "why are you here?"

"i saw you at the mall today. and then i asked my mum about you and she seemed secretive. i was wondering who the little girl was." daniel moved his head to point at hazel playing next to them.

"that's hazel, my daughter."

"how old is she?"

"five"

"five?"

"yes?"

"you broke up with me five years ago. wait... is she mine?" alexandra felt exposed.

"yes, she's yours." to say daniel was shocked was an understatement. he didn't know what to do or what to do. there was a long silence between them.

"and you didn't tell me? why didn't you tell me?" daniel tried to remain calm but it was hard.

"we were young and i didn't want you to think about raising a child. when i found out i was pregnant i broke up with you. i didn't tell you because i would rather have you hate me."

"i could never hate you, alex. i love you, i still do. we could have raised her together."

"i thought you didn't want kids. that's why i did it. i thought it was for the best."

"we were young but that doesn't matter. i would no anything to be with you. i would have given up everything to be with you. i still would." alexandra was touched by daniel's words. she didn't know he still felt the same way about her. she thought he was over her, and that she was the only one suffering from her mistakes.

"i love you too, daniel."
