I ran to the stands as fast as my legs would carry me. I had to get my name on that board before the bell goes off. I pushed past people, trying not to hit anyone with my board.

"I'd like to enter!" I half shouted, throwing my name
tag at the judges. They all chuckled before slipping my name into the computer to show on the big screen in front of hundreds of people.

"We have a last minute competitor, y/f/n y/l/n!"

I ran down towards the shore, the sand burning against my toes. I met up with the other competitors, all of them looking at me while scoffing. Sure, I didn't have an expensive surf suit with brands sponsoring me but I had confidence in myself.

My dad and little brother were standing in the crowd towards the front, smiling and waving. I quickly waved to them before it started.

They called my name soon after. I paddled out, nailing each wave as it came in. I was doing simple moves yet getting higher scores then most. Soon it was only down to 3 of us.

"Hey, y/l/n. You might as well back out now while you can. At least you can make third either way." The blonde snickered at me.

"Save it, barbie." I laughed, sitting calmly on my board in the water.

"Oh its on now," She growled as the other player paddled up.

"Leave her alone, Kens." The guy glared at the blondie.

"She thinks she's gonna win!" Barbie spoke.

The guy looked at my board, to my suit, and everything else apparently.

"Maybe she will. We'll find out soon enough, now lets go." His curly hair laid loosely on his forehead as he swam away from me. The girl followed behind him.

I paddled out away from them, heading deeper into the water. Technically we weren't suppose to go out this far but theres bigger and better waves and I needed to prove myself.

I thought about the curly headed guy again. He was gorgeous. Absolutely handsome. The judges called out our names as I paddled further and further away from the shore.

I heard my name being called and asked why I was going so far but there was no use trying to yell back. I waited. Timing was everything. It needed to be good.

I heard the others names being called. Jack. That's what his name was. He got a higher score then the girl, making him first right now.

The clock was ticking, I had to make a move. I began paddling back to shire more when I felt the water grow cold. This was it.

I pushed, forcing myself in the direction of the water flow. Once the white showed, I stood.

After a bit, it started to enclose on me, I kept my head low, making sure not to get sucked under for good.

The end of my way was closing in faster and faster. I wasn't going to make it out. I grabbed my board, embracing for impact of the water as my speed increased with the wind.

I closed my eyes. Waiting.

When I didn't feel my body being enclosed, I realized that I was out of the wave, headed right back towards the shore. I threw my hands up in the air as my name was called.

"Everyone give it up for our winner of the annual surfer comp., Y/N!"

I ran up on the sand, board in hand, hugging my brother who decided to support me last minute. As people were trying to take pictures of me, I was pulled onto a stand with the girl and Jack.

"You did great. Maybe you could teach me sometime?" Jack smirked at me.

They placed medals on them, handing me a trophy.

"I guess it wouldn't hurt." I smirked back as he gave me his number. I watched him walk off with a few of his friends as I went back to my brother.

God I love california.
