The sun set quickly Saturday night. The sky painted with shades of pink, orange, purple, and light blue. Rays from the setting sun peaked through the tree branches and a cool breeze shook them. Clouds hung in the sky as they always did, though this time with the purple and magenta shadows of the sky.
Meg was stood in her front yard with a duffle bag hanging from one arm and a sleeping bag and pillow in the other. She wore black gym shorts and a hoodie that was a size too big for her. Her hair sat two french braids with a few loose strands hanging out over her face. The hood of the hoodie shrouded her face, but her green eyes still peered out to the sky and the dusk of the world around her.
Felix's SUV pulled into view around ten minutes later and Eleanor pulled open the passenger door, leaping out to help Meg with her things. Eleanor was also wearing comfort clothes as well but managed to make them look nicer on her. She wore a lavender fitted t-shirt that was cropped perfectly at the top of her gray sweatpants. Her hair was set in two curled pig tails with her bangs brushed neatly over her forehead.
"I'm really, really glad you came! Felix and I picked a spot not too far from here in a cute little open area. We brought two tents, we'll be the ones sharing one of course. And a bit of dry fire wood, but Felix now fears it may not be enough and we'll have to collect more." Eleanor scooped up the sleeping bag and pillow from Megs arm and began walking towards the car. "Oh well, I'm sure it'll all be great."
"And I made sure to bring extra s'mores ingredients and a few card games in case we get bored." Meg told Ella after her long period of talking. "Oh perfect I told Felix that one bar of chocolate was NOT enough. Such an under packer." Eleanor rolled her eyes playfully as the girls placed Megs things in the back seat.
"Hey I heard that! And at least I don't pack five outfits for one night in the woods!" Felix teased back, crossing his arms as Eleanor climbed back onto the passenger seat. The blonde stuck her tongue out at the boy. "Well I like to have options ok?"
"Ladies, you're both pretty, can we go now?" Meg gave them looks from the back seat as she pulled her hood down.
"Fine, fine." Felix gave in as he started the car and backed out. Meg waved out the window to Marge and Bob who were excitedly waving to her from inside. Seeing them put a smile on her face. It reminded her of how grateful she was the couple never sent her back or gave up on her. There was no one she would've rather been adopted by.
Eleanor wasn't kidding when she said the campsite wasn't far away. After just a small handful of miles, Felix pulled off the road onto a small path that lead another mile or so into the woods. Felix turned and stopped the car in front of an illuminated open space. "No one get out of the car yet ok?" He told the girls who nodded in a confused agreement and stayed put as he exited the vehicle.
Felix opened the back door first to let Meg out. "Ella stay here for one second ok? Oh and put this on." Felix handed her a blindfold which she reluctantly accepted. "This better be good..." she mumbled jokingly as she wrapped the blindfold around her eyes.
Felix motioned for Meg to walk towards the illuminated space. She followed his motion to the other side of his car and was met with a beautiful sight. The campsite was already set up, two large tents on either side of the middle. String lights were strung from tree to tree creating a barrier of light around everything. In the middle was a fire pit and next to it, a blanket with a few boxes of pizza sat on top of it and some roses. Meg now definitely felt like she intruded on something though she was invited.
She turned to Felix and mounted a shocked "Oh my god." Felix bowed to her and laughed slightly. "Hey I'm still waiting! Did you forget about me!" The blonde called from the open passenger door. "Course not." Felix took her by the hand and led her out of the car and around to the front. "1, 2, 3! Take off the blindfold."
Eleanor slowly moved the fabric from over her eyes and her jaw dropped. "Oh my gosh, did you do all this? Felix this is incredible!" Eleanor threw herself into her boyfriends arms and all of them were laughing. Meg broke the laughter, "Well, I'm starving, let's dig in."
Empty pizza boxes now sat to the side of a dying fire and the three were laying on the picnic blanket, looking at the few stars above them that peaked through fast growing clouds.
"Well this was fun, I'm going to get ready for bed." Meg stood up and brushed any dirt off of her before walking over to the left of the two tents. "I'll join you in a minute, I need to talk to Felix real quick." Eleanor rose after her and pulled Felix to his feet as well. Felix sighed, knowing the romantic gesture was probably not enough to make up for all the fighting. He led Ella into his tent and zipped it up behind her.
Meg changed into her pjs, which were basically cotton shorts and a newer hoodie. She shook her hair free of their braids and situated her makeshift bed on the floor. The peaceful silence was broken by the disagreement in the tent right next to hers. She left her own tent, meeting with the dim light of a still dying fire and an argument between her best friends. Meg thought it wasn't her place to eavesdrop so she decided to make herself useful and gather more firewood.
She flipped her phone out and texted Eleanor 'Went to get firewood. If Im not back in 10 minutes, send the search party ;).' And with that, Meg ventured deeper into the woods behind the safety of their campsite.
The girl felt in the front pocket of her hoodie and found the familiar handle of a flashlight. She pulled the light out of its pocket and clicked a button to turn it on. Immediately, the path in front of her was lit by a narrow light as she hurried to find kindling.
She kept venturing deeper and deeper into the woods until her arms were full of sticks to use for the fire. Satisfied with her finds, Meg turned to return to the camp only to hear a small crack behind her. She froze in her place for a moment before hearing another. The sound was of a twig breaking under something. A foot, a paw, a hoof, she didn't know what.
The sticks dropped onto the forest floor as she turned around with her flashlight scanning the horizon. She caught a sign of nothing as her heart began racing so loud she could hear it echoing. Suddenly, something moved from behind a tree, causing the light of the flashlight to go to it like a magnet.
"Jasper?" Meg asked in disbelief as her shoulders dropped, letting go of the previous tension they held.
