Chapter Sixteen

*Angelisa*

I woke up the next day with Luke on my mind. I can't believe I said that I'm going to let him help me. Aren't I beyond repair? Every time I look at him, I feel something that only Braden has ever made me feel. And now I know he feels it too. I can't risk being in love again can I?

I groan as I roll out of bed and sulk to the bathroom. I pull my hair into a messy ponytail before brushing my teeth and washing my face. Then, I slowly make my way back to my room and pull on a pair of skinny jeans, leg warmers and boots, and a white lacy shirt. I take a long look into the mirror before fastening on my necklace with an angel on it. Braden gave it to me, and I wear it all day every day. It was when he was in the hospital, three days before he died. He said it was my early birthday present. I think, somehow, he knew that he wouldn't be there to give it to me on my real birthday. It's the last thing I ever got from him. I wrap my hand around the angel and look into the mirror. I plug in my hair straightener and pull my hair out of the ponytail. Taking my time, I slowly making sure every piece is perfect. I put one swipe of mascara on my eyelashes, just enough that you can't tell I'm wearing it unless you get really close. Then I begin to walk out of my room, turning around to look in the mirror one last time. I smile clutching the necklace again, thinking the same thing I think every morning: "I love you Braden."

But when I think those words, there's a feeling deep down that's telling me differently.

I arrive to school only a few minutes before the warning bell rings. I'm kind of hoping that I won't see Luke until first period. He's turning out to be an amazing friend, but after yesterday I'm a little scared to see him. I mean now that he's going to "help" me, I don't know what to expect.

"Hey, Angel!" I hear a voice running up behind me. "Just the girl I was looking for." He catches up and walks beside me.

"Luke, hi." I reply looking at the ground.

"You know you can look at me." He grins, as I reluctantly bring my head up to reveal my "annoyed" expression.

"Don't give me that look." He laughs.

"So," I try to change the subject, "why were you looking for me?"

"Oh, right. So I never got to ask you that question yesterday..."  He trails.

"Oh yeah, I forgot about that."

"So… I have to bring you somewhere else though…” He looks around the halls filled with students. "Come with me." He starts walking faster and I have to run to catch up.

"Luke, we're gonna be late for first period."

"No we won't be, I promise.” He pulls me along, so I have no choice but to follow. We wind through a bunch of hallways until we reach the doors that lead out to the fountain he had me come to yesterday.

“Luke why-?”

“Wait, just listen.” He cuts me off, glancing over at the courtyard greenery behind the fountain. “Okay close your eyes.”

“Luke-“

“Come on Angel.” He pleads, and I give in. “Now take my hand so you don’t run into something.” I reluctantly do so. He leads me somewhere forward, but I have no idea where. I feel him lead me up a set of stairs, and then we are still. Suddenly, I’m filled with the scent of flowers. I inhale the beautiful scent, and sigh.

“Okay,” Luke says, “Open your eyes.” I do as he says, and I gasp. Out on the courtyard garden below us, is a large patch of flowers that spell out, “Homecoming?” I’m completely taken aback, and I think Luke senses that from my stolid expression. I didn’t even realize that homecoming was this month! I had forgotten all about it since I didn’t go last year.

“Luke what-?” But he cuts me off again.

“Angel, I’ve already told you how I feel about you, and I know that you’re not ready to move on just yet, and thats perfectly fine. But I’d really love to go the homecoming dance with you. It doesn’t have to be as anything more than friends, but,” He pulls a rose out of his back pocket and hands it to me. How didn’t I notice that he had that? “I’d still like to give you this rose.” I smile and take it from him, consuming the wonderful scent.

“Of course Luke.” I say without even thinking about it, making me realize something new.

I think Luke Hemmings is stealing my heart.
