Chapter Seventeen

*Luke*

She said yes… She said yes. Without any hesitation really, other than that slight confusion. She didn’t even seem tense as we walk back to our first period class… What’s going on? I wasn’t expecting that reaction at all. I’m most certainly okay with it, but it’s odd. But yesterday she did say she was going to let me help her, maybe this is part of that.

“Luke?” Angel asks, shaking me out of my thoughts.

“Huh?”

“The bell rang a few minutes ago, and you’re still sitting there in your desk…” She giggles a little before sitting down next to me. I look around the classroom and realize that no one else is in the room.

“What are you thinking about?” She asks, running a hand through her hair.

I pause before answering, “you, mostly.”

She tenses for a split second, before relaxing. I makes me proud of her that she’s getting better about controlling her fears.

She then cocks her head, gives me a grin and asks, “What about me?"

“Your perfect eyes,” I start out with, smiling back at her. “The way they sparkle in all the right ways when the light hits them. And the way your hair falls on your shoulders just like a models. The way you looked at me when you said yes to my homecoming proposal.” Her grin widens a little.

“Well Luke, I’m glad to hear that.” She jokes before getting more serious. “But I just want you to remember that I’m still recovering from a shattered heart. I appreciate everything you’re doing, but It’s not going to be easy to fix me.” She bites her lip and looks at the ground.

“I don’t care.” I reply. “I’m going to do whatever I can to help.” I stare into her blue orbs, and wish I could stay there forever, but then Angel cuts in.

“We should get to class.”

“I have a better idea,” I put a rebellious grin on my face. Angel quickly spins around, making sure out teacher wasn’t in the room.

“Luke, I- I’ve never ditched-“

“Don’t think of it that way Angel.” I try to convince her that we should leave. “Mrs. Grellie probably didn’t even take attendance, they’ll just think that we were sick today.”

“Luke…” She trails off.

“Come on lets go.” I stand up and put my hand out, waiting for her to take it. She gives me a concerned look, but decides to trust me, placing her hand in mine.

“Where-?”

“Just trust me, it’ll be fun.” I cut her off, and lead her out of the school.

"Can I ask where we’re going now?” Angel asks as we cruise down the highway, windows down, wind blowing in our faces.

“Still a surprise.” I reply teasingly, staring at the road ahead of me.

“How ‘bout now?”

“Nope.”

“Now?”

“Still no.”

“Nowwwwww?” She drags out the ending of the word.

“Just because you sound like a 2 year old does not mean I will tell you where we are going.” I take a turn onto a less busy country road, and push the gas pedal down a little farther.
