Chapter Eighteen
*Angelisa*
The day after Luke took me to the beach house went by in the blink of an eye. Most of my classes were boring as always, but I had Luke on my mind every second I wasn’t doing some dumb math problem. All I could think about was how perfect his blonde hair looks when it's wet, and how his blue eyes look when they stare into mine. Something changed in me when he took me to his beach, and I feel like I can let myself be attracted to him now, without feeling like I’m hurting Braden. Even though it hurts to think that, I think it’s true.
It was the next day and I was sitting in third period, thinking about, to my surprise, Luke. I didn’t remember seeing him in our first class this morning, and I was concerned that he was sick or something.
Then I remembered how fast he was driving yesterday. What if he wasn’t at school today because he got into an accident! What if he’s hurt?
“Mr. Lentz?” I raise my hand, completely interrupting our teachers lecture.
“Angelisa? It’s very unlike you to interrupt during class time.” He replies folding his hands in his lap.
“Can I go to the bathroom?” I ignore his comment about me. I know I don’t talk that often in class but I mean, I’ve gone through a lot of depressing things so I have a valid reason. “Please?”
“Hurry, you won’t want to miss to much.” I quickly get up and jog down the hallways to the nearest empty girls bathroom. After double checking that I’m alone, I pull out my phone and dial Luke’s number, my hands shaking in fear. He can’t be hurt, he can’t be.
The phone rings and rings and rings, but he doesn’t pick up. Instead of trying to leave a voicemail, I just call again. And again, and again, and again. Nothing. That’s when I start to panic. What if he’s hurt really bad? What if he’s dying? I can’t loose someone again! I dial the phone one more time, praying a silent prayer that he’ll pick up.
“Hello?” I suddenly hear his voice on the other end of the phone.
“Luke!?” I exclaim louder than I meant to.
“Angel? Is everything okay? You called me like twenty times, are you alright?”
“I’m fine I just…” I trail off, trying to calm myself down. “You aren’t at school today, and so I just kind of worked myself up over thinking you got into a car accident or something and-“ I try to explain to him why I was so concerned, but he cuts me off.
“You were worried about me.” He says it more as a statement than a question, and I can almost hear him smiling.
“Yeah… Why?”
“You’re, you’re getting better Angel. About me, about… About love.” I can hear the admiration in his voice.
“So, um,” I suddenly feel a little awkward about the situation, and try to change the subject. “So where are you?”
“Well I’m certainly not hurt, so you can stop worrying.”
“Thank God.” I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.
“No, I’m at home sick as a dog. I think ditching yesterday brought me some bad karma.” He laughs.
“You said it wasn’t ditching!!!” I exclaim louder than I mean to. “And don’t lie to me, you’re not sick. Where are you?” I can hear people talking in the background of the call.
“I’m… Well…” He tries, but trails off.
“Luke?” I ask impatiently.
All of a sudden I hear a loud crash from his end of the phone that sounds like a cymbal.
“Luke!?” I inquire again.
“Just come to the bands house,” he says. “I’ll show you what we’re working on.”
“You want me to skip school, again!?” I cry out in horror.
“Yes, I’ll see you in fifteen minutes.” And then he hangs up. He just hangs up on me.
“Luke!” I call out to myself, again a little to loudly.
“Ms. Islea?” I suddenly hear a new voice from behind me. I quickly snap my head around to face Mrs. Grellie.
“Oh,” I utter a little surprised. “Hi Mrs. Grellie.”
“Don’t ‘Hi Mrs. Grellie’ me little lady.” She says forcefully, grabbing my shoulder. “You are supposed to be in class right now. Who were you talking to? Do I need to take that phone of yours away?”
“Oh I, I um…” I pause briefly trying to think of a way out of this situation. “I was talking to my mom. She-“
“Don’t make up stories Ms. Islea, I heard you say Luke. That better not be Luke as in your lover?” I wince as she says ‘your lover’. He’s just a very close friend right? Maybe things really are moving in that direction.
“No, no of course not.” I lie. “No I was talking to my mom about my, um, my cousin Luke. Luke Rick.” I pull a random last name out of nowhere. “He just got into a bad car accident and my mom wants me to meet her at the hospital, yeah.” I bite my lip at how bad this lie is, but Mrs. Grellie surprisingly buys it.
“Oh thats horrible!” She lets go of my shoulder and I wince a little in pain. “You better get going right now, I’ll tell the office that you left.” She gives me a pat on the arm and quickly walks away.
I can’t believe I just did that.
I just lied to a teacher! What’s going to happen when they find out that my cousin didn’t actually get into a car accident!? I’ll probably get suspended! Oh my gosh, Luke better have something good planned for me at the bands place.
I shake my head in disbelief and gather my things, heading out to my car.
