unexpected - ruel van dijk

the flight

i wake up to the light patter of rain on my roof. i open my eyes groggily and wait for my vision to come into focus. my eyes lay upon my packed suitcase standing next to my door, and my stomach is washed with waves and waves of excitement. i hear a vague knock at the door. my door opens slightly and my mum pokes her head in, her eyes are smiling. 

"are you ready?" she asks me.

"my bags are packed, i just need to get dressed" i tell her.

"get ready quickly and we'll leave to go to the airport in 20 minutes." she tells me. i quickly get out of bed, the air is turning quite bitter as we are moving into winter. i hurry and put on my blue baggy jeans, my black belt and my mint green crop. i chuck on my ruel hoodie over the top to keep me warm. i then drag my suitcase down the stairs and help myself to some cereal. before long my mum is rushing me out to the car and we begin to drive to the airport. of course my mum tells me a million things that i have to remember, but i'm too excited to even listen. i get to go on tour.

we pull up to the international terminal at sydney airport. my heart is beating out of my chest. i can't wait to go on tour.

my mum parks the car and walks with me into the airport where we find ruel, his  family and his team. he's taking a photo with a group of girls who must be fans. i smile at him from a distance and eventually he spots me and grins back. he runs a hand through his hair as he thanks the girls for supporting him. the girls walk away, starstruck. he walks over to me. 

"you excited?" he says. a small smirk plays upon his lips. i nod as he envelopes me in a hug. a grin spreads over my face. 

"brynne!" coco runs over. i break away from ruel's hug and hug her instead. ruel shakes his head, begins to laugh and walks back over to his family and team. i can see nate in the distance laughing at ruel too. 

"i'm so fucking excited!" coco screams. 

"me too!" i respond, with the same level of enthusiasm. 

"coco you idiot" ruel calls out. "we have to check in for the flight"

"shut up ruel" coco laughs as we both walk over to our suitcases. my mum, who had been talking to ruel's mum kate gives me a hug goodbye as we entered the line for check-in. 

"see ya mum," i say as i wave. she waves back and walks out of the airport. we check in and put our carry on bags through security. i am so beyond excited. as we walk through the terminal to our gate, ruel runs up and walks next to me.

"thank you so much for coming" he says. i look over at him. his expression is so sincere and his eyes glisten as do mine, with the same expression of excitement.

"i wouldn't want to be anywhere else" i tell him. 

oh, how i want to kiss him. the thought has never really occurred to me before, only that time when i was drunk. but i'm beginning to feel something new. something so strong that i am struggling to ignore it. an emotional attachment almost. i have never met someone who feels everything so deeply; someone who cares this much about me. it feels good. i feel valued for once. i look at him and it's as if he knows exactly what i'm thinking. he smiles and i smile back. our shared happiness radiates as we walk through the international terminal of sydney airport.

i feel my fears and anxieties slipping away. what if this is meant to be?

we reach our gate and sit in the chairs, we have about an hour till our flight. ruel sits in the chair next to me. i put my airpods in and put on 'love of my life' by queen. i let the melodic chords of piano flood my ears and i shut my eyes as freddie mercury's voice paints a picture so beautiful it would bring anyone to tears! i feel ruel lean over my shoulder and look at my phone. i open my eyes and look at him, our eyes meet.  

i love that song  he mouths. i smile and look down at my phone. 

"i do too" i whisper. i look at him and take one of my airpods out. i offer it to ruel. he accepts and puts it in. he shuts his eyes, just as i was doing before a relaxed expression washes over his face. i shut my eyes too and let myself dissolve into the music once again.

we end up listening to the remainder of the playlist, i pull out my book and read a few chapters before we are boarded for our flight. 

the flight takes about three hours. ruel and i continue to listen to my music. it's so rare for me to find someone who will sit through my immensely long playlists. i open spotify and put on his song painkiller. he turns and looks at me with a smirk. i laugh and he shakes his head. i begin to lipsync the words and dance in my seat. he takes out his phone and records me. once the song finishes, he takes out his airpod.

"so you finally learnt my lyrics huh?" he jeers.

"only because you forced me to" i laugh.

the plane begins to descend into new zealand and eventually the wheels of the plane hit the ground with a thud. we exit the plane once it had stopped and walk into the terminal to collect our bags. there are a few girls waiting for ruel in the terminal, and once again he greets them with a gracious smile and they take photos. he towers over them and i can't help but laugh.

after he had finished talking to the fans, we all walk outside and get into taxis. nate and ruel's team are in one, and me, ruel, ralph, coco and kate are in the other. they take us to the hotel and we get our rooms. coco and i are sharing.

coco and i head up to our room and begin to unpack a bit and get ready to sleep, because auckland is two hour ahead of sydney, the sun is already beginning to go down. i have a shower and we order room service. eventually my eyes grow heavy and i fall asleep, insanely excited for the concert tomorrow. i have faith that everything will fall into place. 

but will it actually?

sorry this one took so long to write! it's taken me a while to think of ways of filling the story in between the exciting parts. hopefully this wasn't too boring for you to read!

i'll try and update more regularly, but school is beginning to heat up again, so i can't make any promises. anyway, i hope you enjoyed this chapter.
