28: What is Love?

Sakura froze.
Lips on lips.

Sasuke Uchiha was kissing her. Sakura Haruno. No words.
It's safe to say that Sakura was freaking out, well, mostly mentally. Her eyes were wide open. Sakura pulled away and turned around. There was a long silence between them. Sakura bit her lip and gathered her courage to look at Sasuke again. He was looking away from her, but she noticed a slight pink tint on his cheeks. He looked disturbed. Did she do something wrong? Probably.

Sasuke noticed her staring at him and immediately turned around and started to walk quickly away. Sakura took in a deep breath and chased after him.
"Wait!"

Sasuke flinched. She caught up to him and grabbed his arm. "What did you mean by that?"

"..........."

She took in a big breath of air when Sasuke started to turn around. Her chest tightened in anticipation. She looked up.

Sasuke stared at her with a glimmer in his eyes.

And then disappeared with a flash, leaving only a little cloud of dust on the training ground.

"Sakura-Chan, Teme did not come train with us again today! Do you think he hates us or something?" Naruto crossed his arms and let out a snort. Sakura scratched the back of her head and smiled sadly,
"Well, um...I tried to get him back but..."

"He said no?" Naruto added to her sentence. Sakura slapped her hands on her face and leaned over on a log.
"Well...I don't really know, it's complicated." Sakura said with a frown on her face and then stood straight again. Naruto jumped down from the log and stood in front of Sakura.

"You're being kinda down lately, did that bastard say something mean to you?" Naruto asked with concern.

Sakura smiled, "It was nothing, I guess I'm just sad because he isn't at training with us. I miss the old days." It wasn't a lie. She was reminiscing about the time back in her old timeline when they used to train together as Genin. Even if she was technically a Genin now, it didn't feel the same. Some things have changed. And she doesn't know if it's for the better or for the worse. Naruto reached out to pat Sakura's shoulder, then his hand slid down to grab hers.

"Let's go train then. Maybe we'll find Sasuke."

Sakura nodded and started walked alongside Naruto.

Maybe ignoring her will be the best thing to do right now.

Later that night when Sasuke arrived at his house he dragged himself to the bed and sat down. His thoughts were just Sakura. Pink hair. Soft Emerald Eyes. And surprisingly soft lips. He wanted to tear his hair out.

Sasuke pushed himself up from the bed and opened his drawer. He took his bottle of prescribed medication. As he downed a pill, his chest tightened, thinking about what had happened. She was just a teammate. Sasuke gritted his teeth. Then he laid down and closed the lights. He tossed and turned.

He looked up at the ceiling, it stared back at him. He was still for a moment, and then he touched his forehead. He closed his eyes.

Useless, useless, useless. Unnecessary. Don't think. Don't feel.

His heart squeezed with sorrow. He remembered a distant memory of his mother. Grief overcame him once more like many years before.

Sasuke hasn't seen her in so long.

"Mommy? Why did you get married with dad? I saw the other parents at the academy holding hands and putting their mouths together, but you never do that with dad..."

"Oh silly, you don't need to be all romantic and affectionate to be married. Your father and I share a special connection, we love each other."

"...Huh? A special connection? Can you tell me about it?" He ran up to his mother and hugged her leg.

".......That's a bit hard, Sasuke..." Mikoto chuckled, she bent down to meet Sasuke's gaze.

"....I guess, love is a feeling you get in your heart when you've found the right person. When the two of you decide to strengthen that bond together, they will bring you joy. But if you wait too long and do nothing........ they will bring you sadness. Don't make them do it all themself when it comes to it, my dear Sasuke."

He didn't want to strengthen his bond. He didn't need anyone, for he needed to accomplish his goal. Alone.

And in order to do it he must make sacrifices.

He didn't want to be held back. Yet, it felt so gut-wrenching.

It was just not a possibility, he was so confused, so tired of being around her so much.

He doesn't feel right around her so she is definitely not it.

Definitely not. It's not that simple.

Deep down, he knew. Denying didn't really change anything.

He wanted to grab ahold of their connection tear it apart, it could be so easy and yet...

Unseverable.
