After walking down all the stairs to the main floor, they were exhausted and breathing heavily. Ella took her friend to a small cleaning closet and plopped down on the floor close to a wall.
"Why?" Melony asked her friend. Then, Ella easily moved a stack of boxes and buckets to the side. Ella smiled brightly, her face red with pride and exhaustion. In the wall is a small, hand sized hole. Ella smiled and pushed the stone doorway open. Ella crawled through the hole and Melony followed.
They were now in the kitchen where fairies fluttered around and an ogre was watching the dishes wash themselves. He noticed the girls, whipped his hands on his pink apron, and grunted at them. He went to the fridge and pulled out two plates of flaked ice cream. It had a nice brown, flaky top. He handed it to them, two spoons, and went back to watching the dishes.
"I noticed that you've eaten some ice cream nearly every day and figured maybe it would make you feel better." Ella explained. Melony beamed and flung her arms around her friend, nearly knocking both of them over.
The ice cream was wonderfully cold and the outside was still warm and crispy. They enjoyed themselves and talked while they ate their desert. When it started to get late, they went their separate ways and returned to their rooms.
It's been a week since the incident, and the artifacts still haven't been found. Flyers were posted in every classroom and on every cork board on what was stolen and, if found, to bring them to a teacher. Everyone's been a little tense and the air first years have been getting picked on. Three days ago, some earth students threw stink bombs down the air hallway. The students that were in the back of the hall were nearly unaffected, Melony wasn't so lucky. Now the water students are getting picked on to. Some fire students had enchanted the water hallway so that all the students would turn blue when they exited their room.
During lunch, the two girls talked about their families. In Melony's bag is homemade chocolate chip cookies and a picture of her dog. Melony gave a cookie to Ella and showed her the picture of her dog; Sprinkle. In the picture, the mini whippet was bouncing around on puffy clouds with a pink collar. Ella gushed at the dog,
"We only have chickens and pigs. It's harder to cuddle with pigs when they get big. But mom has a horse and dad has a cow, their ancient. Older than me and Ben." They made plans for later that night to go to Ella's room to look at the pictures of her pig, Porker.
Classes proceeded as normal, and the other students weren't giving the air and water kids direct trouble, just little verbal jabs here and there. History class was slightly awkward, but they continued to learn about the world before it was magic. They had to write a small paper about how witches stayed to themselves, living in their self-designed sections like on the clouds and in the ground. The air and water witches lived nearly completely separate from everyone else, magic and non-magical people alike. The air group found a way to make their towns and cities invisible in the clouds to non-air magic users. The water users simply lived in the very depths of the ocean; weir it was impossible to find them.
Many fire users chose to live on land and brought earthly things back to the core, creating successful businesses. The core was, at the time, an inhospitable place to live, it was hot and dark, because of that nothing grew there. The earth magic users blended in with the non-magic users the most. Many lived on the surface as farmers, a few lived below ground. Many that lived on land had space underground, below their house, to practice magic safely.
Melony looked forward to Aromatics practice, as for air class, they were working on more practical everyday things. Mrs.Puffins classroom sat near the air students rooms at the highest point of the school. In the room, there is a long, wide window that nearly took up the whole wall. The window looked out into the front of the school. Sometimes, when Melony looked out the window she would see other first year earth and fire students having joint classes near the end of the hour. The group of students threw around dirt balls and drew fire circles on the ground, showing off to each other, playing and enjoying each other.
In air class they worked on moving cubes with their wind magic. All twenty of them sat in a long line with a heavy metal box in front of them, while Ms. Puffin and Hamish each held a long clipboard in their hands.
"You will be using the incantation Willagene. This will help you turn your cube. We will keep doing this until each and every one of you can move your cube silently, without the incantation. Ready, set, GO!"
Everyone was yelling Willegene over and over. Many of the cubes teetered or stood on a side. Finally, after nearly 15 minutes, the cubes began to move. Melony was thrilled, her cube quickly made a full turn and landed on its side. Once she turned her cube, she did it multiple times. By the end of the hour, everyone could easily move their cubes, but no one was able to do it without the incantation yet.
Melony and Ella sat together at supper and talked about their favorite books. They were going to send for them in the mail and trade them. They decided that it would be a book club, just for the two of them. After supper, she wrote to her parents about her day and asked for the book. Within 15 minutes, her book was sent along with a present. It was a small but wide metal tube with a handle on top. When Melony opened the top, a wand pulled out. It was a long stick with a circle on top, it was a bubble blower. The note said, Saw this at a store and thought of you. Maybe you and your friends could have some fun with it. Love Mom & Dad. She put the book in her gray bag and ran to the elevator, bag in one hand and cylinder in the other.
