The fairies chased them until they were in a hallway with other people. They traveled all the way to the lowest floor to find the Principal. This is the fire users' section, so it's dark and the only light sources were on the sides of the walls like torches and the dim glow of the floor. The Principal's office isn't hard to find, it's one corner and two hallways away.
"Wait," Melony said "what are we going to say?"
"About what?" Asked Ella.
"About why we were in the kitchen." There was a long pause.
"Ok," Ella said "we were there to visit Biscuit. That's all, ok."
"Ok." Melony agreed.
The Principal's door is large and heavy, with bronze print on the front that says Principal Scorching's office. There's a giant bronze door knocker they used instead of knocking. TAP, TAP, TAP. Ella was the one to do the knocking. Both girls felt nervous and sweaty. Ella's hand suddenly hurt and she had to move the bag to the other hand.
His assistant, a troll named Jane, opened the door for the two girls. The troll adjusted her glasses and addressed the girls. "Hello, Principal Scorching's is busy right now. How can I help you?" As per usual, Ella is the one to do all the talking. She held the makeshift bag out in front of herself and said "we found the missing artifacts."
Jane raised her eyebrows at them in disbelief and closed the door. The door opened again, but this time it was the Principal. He looked tired, more wrinkled, and with grayer hair. "Come in."
His office is dark, his desk is a mahogany color, and his chair is red. The two chairs across from his desk is black, plastic, bumpy, and intentionally uncomfortable. They sat and squirmed around, trying to get comfortable, but failed. "Well," he asked with a tone to his voice, "I was told you have the artifacts." It wasn't a question.
"We found them." Ella said, trying not to scrunch her face in annoyance. She stood back up and plumped the sack on his desk, not caring for the pens and papers under it. It made a painfully loud clanking noise as she dropped it, little pieces of glitter fell as she did. He moved the fabric to get a better look at the items inside, as he did, his face turned from annoyance to shocked. He investigated it all, checking for any scratches or dents on the objects. He began to speak after a while.
"Where did you find them?" He addresses Melony.
"In the kitchen. In the large cupboard. The-" Melony was cut off.
"And why were you in the kitchen?" He asked quickly, still only talking to Melony. Ella tried to step in, but Melony replied quicker.
"We wanted to visit Biscuit. It's been a while since we've seen him."
"And why were you snooping through the cupboards?"
"We weren't. We were getting him a spoon when we got curious to why there was a piece of cloth on the floor." He didn't say anything for a while, he looked deep in thought.
"Alright, I'll look into it. But for now, I'll be writing your parents. Ms. Brown I-" Ella cut him off.
"I just thought that you should know that the fairies were very angry when we found them. They tried to take them back from us and chased us. They gave us these scratches." He looked at the tiny scratch marks on Melony's face and Ella's hands, and seemed to take it into consideration.
"Alright. Thank you, girls I'll be talking to you soon." and they left quickly, running to the dining room while holding hands.
The weeks leading up to the swimming competition were considerably peaceful. Biscuit had put the potion into George's drink for them. Which was entertaining because he was talking to a girl that he had a crush on when his incurably bad breath hit. Many brownies that were hired under the impression that they were fairies, were fired. Melony had gotten a letter about how proud they were of her for figuring it out, but how unlike her it was to put herself in trouble was. Ella had also gotten a letter from her family, that Melony assumed was a scolding because her friend was put out because of it. But the junior Aromatics team was going to have a competition of their own a week and a half after The Guppies. Both the girls were excited for each other. Ella spent every free moment at the lake. Every weekend and free period the girls sat at the pong with their feet in the water studying and talking.
