Melony was so nervous she could barely eat. She only ate one and a half strawberry and cream cake, one poppy seed muffin, and one jellied toast. The fairies zoomed and zipped around the room taking out empty plates and bringing in new ones. These surly little creatures stuck their miniscule fingers in the sweets when they thought the adults weren't looking. There little fingers quickly turned sticky due to the jelly, sugar, and butter. The only person that the creatures seem to like is an older blonde woman in pure white clothes.
Soon, all the students were ushered into the announcement hall. Unlike yesterday, the room was filled to the brim with seats for all the students to sit while the teachers went to their classrooms to prepare. As Melony was squeezing herself into the room, she felt someone poke her on the shoulder. It was Ella, and together they grabbed the first empty seats they got their hands on. They were all seated like sardines in a can. If anyone moved their elbows or stretched their legs, they would without a doubt hit another student.
"Welcome new students and old ones," the elderly Principal Scorchings began "I hope you all are as excited to see us as we are to see you. Now,"
"Pss." Ella whispered to Melony "can I borrow a pencil for a while. I have no idea what happened to all of mine. I think Ben's messing with me." Melony gave her a confused face while she gave her new friend the pencil.
"My brother." She said while rolling her eyes.
"As we do every year," they listened to the principal again "a few things got lost yesterday in the scramble of the move. If you see any of these things, please give them to a teacher. A pair of red reading glasses, a silver bracelet, a box of triple chocolate cookies," the list went on for a while, covering all sorts of things from barrettes to pocket change. After what felt like ours, they were finally dismissed.
The two girls stayed at the back of the heard and waited around together. Ella's brother passed by and messed up her hair again and gave Melony a small wave with his wand hand. They took the elevator with a few other lost students to the bottom floor. The only seats left were on the front middle part of the room. George was also in this class and in the front of the room. First year's creature studies are dedicated to human like magical beings. When Melony looked at the syllabus, she could see that they would be studying centaurs, slykes', fairies, ogres, trolls, etc....
"Let's start with some fun facts, fun facts for a fun year as I always say." Mr. Greengrass exclaimed "Some creatures have a natural fear of certain magic users. For example, giants are afraid of earth users and fairies are afraid of air magic users. Whereas sea serpents are only domesticated by water uses like phoenixes can only be domesticated by fire users."
Classes passed slowly, it's a day full of introductions and classroom rules. Potions class was with Mrs.Tilly, who has lilac hair and loomed over the students with her above average height. A rolly polly worm sat on her desk, right under her lamp, happily wiggling around. Melony assumed that this wiggly little creature must be Mrs.Tillys familiar.
Melanie shared a cauldron with a fire girl named Poppy. She has dark skin, long hair, big bug like glasses, and wore a wide brimmed hat. Throughout the whole class, Poppy never looked or talked to Melony. This made the air girl nervous, assuming by the end of class that the other girl hated her.
History class is when Melony saw Ella again. They tried to get a seat together but, the seats are ordered alphabetically, so no such luck. Melony was actually semi excited about this class, and not as nervous as she was about others.
The schedule is what you would expect, it had all the stages of how magical history advanced. It starts with before the beginning of magic, the change during the magical uprising, the state of the world after, and the rebuilding. It would be covering the basics and they would be learning about the world's stages in depth later, as they get older.
The students took notes about the world before it was mainly magical. "The people of the past relied solely on cars, which are different to the cars we have now, and telephones that connected people's voices by a cord. As a whole, it was a slow time to live in." Mrs.Greengrass informed the students.
Finally, it was lunch time, both girls sat together at the water table, after Melony had gotten food from her own. Melony noticed that this table was mainly full of a variety of soups and fish while hers was filled with breads and cheeses. Melony ate crumpets with cheese while Ella ate a fish soup.
"SOOO," Ella said shyly "my brother told me this stupid rumor, that you guys can fly. Can you?" She said the last part and her face went a little red from asking.
"Yep" Melony exclaimed. Ella dropped her spoon in the soup with a small thud and little bits of it dribbled over the side. Ella went wide eyed and slack jawed with excitement.
"Later thought, when were older. This year we're going over nests and carpets. Of course, along with some of the more boring stuff." Ella remained slack jawed as she talk "Wow. We're going over how to make gills and stuff like that. I've been trying all year to grow some but I'm just missing...something." Melony reached over and patted her friends' hand.
"So, I was wondering" But Melony was cut off by George "Can I talk to you?" Next to him stood Ben, the black-haired girl's older brother. He gave the girls a smile and a dramatic eye roll. Ella rolled her eyes in return, but seriously, and left. As they argued and George pointed at Melony, a couple of fairies took a break and entertained themselves by listening to the argument. They snickered, made faces, and wiggled their buts at the young students. Eventually Ella got so upset by George that she stomped her foot and left, leaving Melony alone at a table she didn't belong in.
