Melony is officially a finder now. Over the many weeks of practice, it has been decided who would be a snatcher and who would be a finder. For whatever reason, Ms. Puffin had tried to make Melony a snatcher. But, with her nerves and un-aggressive personality, she was made to be a finder. She has her list of objects to find in hand. Someone must have found the pin nettle because it magically crossed itself off the list.
Melony is currently focused on finding the false bird. She sees the pack of ravens currently hanging out on a tree. She knew that the false bird was with them, but anytime someone went near them, they attacked. There were only so many objects that need to be captured, and it's worth a good amount of points. But she was having trouble getting in there and competing to grab something.
So, she patted her helmet for luck and went for it. The murder smelled her fear as she tried to creep closer and not be seen. A couple of them went for her as she flew past. As she quickly approached the branch most of the murder flew up and circled her, nearly pecking her face and hitting her with their wings. She finally opened her eyes, remembering they couldn't get to them through the goggles, and looked.
She stared at the angry animals squawking and pecking at her. Their shiny eyes looked at her and their wings flapped violently. Then, she saw one that looked different and only hovered over the branch. His eyes aren't shiny, his feathers aren't silky, his movements are awkward, and his wings moved slower. Melony isn't positive that this is the right one but, she went for it.
She reached a hand out and it tried to fly away, but was to slow. She moved her carpet towards it in a jerking movement and grabbed it by the edge of the wing. It felt hard and wooden, the second she got a decent grip on the object, it stopped moving and squawking, turning into a small wooden raven figurine. After a few more minutes of avoiding fake lightning strikes and geese trying to take their found items, practice was over.
When Melony came into the school's entrance, she looked at the notice board. On bright blue poster paper said that in three weeks The Guppies will be competing with Hocuses Schools Junior swim team The Minnows. School will be canceled that day to participate in the event.
Melony was thrilled for her friend. She went to the lake to see if she was there. She was, along with the rest of the junior swim team. So, she decided to sit and wait, she pulled a book out of her school bag and started to read. She was getting into it when she was interrupted.
"Eh hm..." she looked up at the freckled, curly haired boy.
"Can I ask you a question?" George asked.
Melony was reluctant to respond, by the look on his face he was looking for a fight.
"It depends on the question." was what she felt was the best response.
"Is it you?" She squished her face in confusion. "You know. Stealing stuff and the goo bombs. Was it you?" To Melony this felt out of the blue, after all, he has never talked to her before.
"I don't know where this is coming from..."
"Well, you know, you're a wind user and your family's pretty famous for that. All air magic users are known for it." Melony is shocked, where is this coming from, especially from someone who's practically a stranger.
Ben came running over red in the face with his wand in hand, nervous because of the current situation. Between pants and heavy breathing, he plastered on a smile.
"Hey, hi, how are you doing. I just got to... woo... talk to my buddy here for a minute. Excuse us." Ben dragged George away about the same time as Ella showed up.
"What was that about?" Ella looked angry; she obviously heard the end of the conversation.
".... I don't really know." Melony didn't want to talk about what just happened. Both girls watched the boys and tried to listen in. All they could hear was Ben's muffled voice yelling at George. Until George finally yelled "well I was just asking if she did it. And she didn't answer." he pointed at Melony.
The swim team at the bottom of the hill and other students walking around are now staring.
"And ever since Ella's been hanging out with her, she started acting different. It's all her fault." At the end of his speech Ella clenched her fists and stomped over to the boys. She stood in front of George and punched him square in the face. He covered his nose while giving a small squeal of pain and stumbled back a few steps. Ben tried to get a look at his nose while yelling at Ella. The black-haired girl marched over to Melony and held out her hand, both girls left.
They went to Melony's room to look at the clouds. They sat on the bed and looked out the window in silence. Ella was still steaming, while Melony sat quietly trying not to upset her friend further. Ella slapped her hand against her leg and exclaimed "let's get back at him!"
"...How?" Melony asked tentatively.
"I'll tell you tomorrow at breakfast!" Ella gave Melony a hug and ran out of the room excitedly.
