The next day at breakfast Ella was late, but when she showed up, she quickly walked to Melony. She sat close to her friend and they spoke quietly.
"I brought my mom's old potion book back from vacation, she used it to mess with her brothers. Anyway, I've marked my favorite pages."
The first page that was marked with a silver piece of wrinkled paper was a potion to make someone bloat so much that they turn into a circle and float away. The next marked page is much more subtle, it makes a person sweat profusely, slowly sweating more and more, until they leave a puddle of water wherever they stand. The last potion is for a boil covered tongue. It makes the drinkers mouth dry, hard to speak, and boils along with other bumps will grow all over the inside of the mouth. Hair will grow on the boils, and their breath would smell putrid. This, they decided, will do perfectly. They agreed to make the potion Monday morning.
The potion requires half a garlic and half an onion, along with pepper, cotton, a dried piece of parchment, a bubble of hot air, a cup of swamp mud, one strand of hair, and lastly lavender to cover the taste and smell. The girls had run around Friday getting the ingredients. Ella got the lavender and mud from Mrs.Tilly while Melony got the pepper, garlic, and onion from Biscuit. Ella steamed a piece of parchment then blow dried it so that the texture became crinkly and dry. Melony lit a candle and swirled the air around it until it was a perfect circle that was warm and had a small flame in the center.
They worked on the spell in Ella's room. They filled the bathtub up halfway with boiling hot water and put a mini cauldron that Ella got from Mrs.Tilly and started with the dry ingredients like cotton, pepper, paper, and hair first. Next, they added the smelly ingredients and mud. They stirred the ingredients until it became creamy. They checked the instructions to make sure they were on track. After seven minutes of stirring it was time for the bubble of hot air. When the bubble entered the cauldron, a puff of red smoke flew out and the putrid smell exploded. The girl's eyes watered and they coughed and gagged at the horrid oder.
"At least we know it smells." said Melony.
They shoved a handful of lavender into the cauldron, desperate to stop the smell. It covered the smell slightly, but didn't completely get rid of the Oder till Melony had thoroughly stirred it into the mixture. The girls watched as the fire from the bubble melted everything into a smooth liquid, and the lavender turned the mixture clear and odorless. The girls felt proud and had candy to celebrate, even though the garlic smell had seeped into their clothes. The girls parted to change and planned to meet in the kitchen to carry out the rest of their plans.
Ella is of course the first one to get to the cleaning cleaning and clear away the boxes. Melony held the cauldron as Ella crawled through the hole in the wall. Melony slid the potion to her friend and crawled through the wall herself. The kitchen was in a hustle preparing for lunch. The fairies hissed at the girls when they entered. The ogre stirred a large pot of stew and checked the oven. He also wore a large green and yellow striped apron. When he saw the girls, he gave them a tiny finger wave.
"Biscuit," Ella began slowly "we have a prank that we want you to help us with." He shook his head and gave a small grunt.
"Please," Ella begged "it's on George, he's been absolutely awful to us all year. And it's not like something Ben would do. It just makes his breath really bad, and he won't taste it in his milk. Please." Biscuit rolled his eyes at Ella, but in the end, he agreed. Both girls gave him a hug, which made his normally olive-green face go red.
They heard footsteps and boys snickering not too far away. Biscuit put the small cauldron in a high cupboard so no one could find it. Then he took the girls hands and led them to a large cupboard to hide. They hopped in and adjusted themselves, and soon the door swung open with a clatter.
"Hey Biscuit!" It was George. On the walls in the cupboard are cooking utensils like whisks, spatulas, wooden spoons, etc....
"So, this is the kitchen." Said another boy that Melony didn't recognize. The bottom of the cupboard was soft, and covered in fabric. But something poked the girls, and it became more painful the longer they sat.
"We were wondering if you could do us a favor?" George asked. "We have a prank to play on Ella's friend. You know the one right?" There's a pause, the girls assumed the ogre was either nodding or shaking his head. In the cupboard Ella had grabbed Melony's hand and whispered in her ear, "don't worry. We're gonna get them."
"The air one on the Aro-, Aro-something team." It was the other boy that answered. There was another pause. "Oh, come on biscuit, it'll only turn her blue. That's all." There was a final long pause, Biscuit must have agreed to get rid of them because George said "Thanks. See you around." The boys ran out of the room laughing and talking about how angry Melony would be. After they could only hear their footsteps in the distance, Biscuit opened the cupboard.
The girls practically jumped out. They knew there would be little bruises on their legs from whatever they sat on. Melony yanked the fabric from the cupboard floor and they were shocked by what they found.
There is a ring, a golden pair of glasses, a brooch, and a sack of coins. The fairies gave a squeal and flew at the girls trying to hit them and take back the cover. Ella noticed that on the wall is a 4-inch square piece of fabric, the top two edges were pinned to the wall and the bottom sides were swinging freely. Ella pulled the fabric from the pins and the fairies went berserk.
There is a glittering hole in the wall. Inside is a pair of white silky gloves, a necklace with a diamond and silver chain, and the final object is the glittering genie ring. The three missing artifacts. The two girls gathered all the objects into the fabric. The whole time the fairies bit them, which felt lake shallow needle pricks and pulled at their hair, genuinely trying to yank it out. Biscuit hid in the corner, trying to stay out of the conflict. The girls ran out of the room, not even bothering to fix the closet they came out of.
